Re: Cheating in chess

The player that Matt refers to was reported in May to the 4NCL after more than 50 perfect games. Perfect up to a point to be more accurate; the point where the game was easily winning. Yes, you read that correctly, more than 50. Nothing was done until the ban late last month at a very high-profile m...

Re: Cheating in chess

I know that the Welsh Management also gave daily lectures on cheating but I have to say that Scotland are well ahead of us. It seems likely to me that the spectre of bans was a major contributory factor to them being clearly the cleanest team in the competition. It's not only a junior problem of cou...

Re: Cheating in chess

Apologies for the brain fade Andy; Netherlands not Scotland. Also, a second English player was suspended from the competition, though not banned from lichess.

Re: Cheating in chess

Only one banned from each of England, Scotland, Wales and Belgium (from their play in the event) plus one further ban of a Dutch player for play prior to the Glorney. The first 4 mentioned were, by some margin, the worst offenders. From my reading of all 300 games, though still working my way throug...

Re: Cheating in chess

I didn't make them say it Nick. They do say it. And it was the 'worst' game, Stockfish-top-line-wise, that you picked on. And, given that all players must know by know by now that Prof Regan's software reports Stockfish's top line, it may be a more reliable guide to engine use, along with centipawn ...

Re: Cheating in chess

....alternatively Adams-Jaden could be viewed as a 51 move game in which neither side made a mistake or blundered (4 inaccuracies by each, according to what lichess says).

Re: Cheating in chess

Whether or not to protect the rights and sensibilities of those accused seems to be splitting the forum. How about the victims? They get very little airtime on this forum. A few weeks ago I had a difficult conversation with an up and coming 10 year old who was devastated after a(nother) loss against...

Re: Cheating in chess

I was very interested to see how the 4NCL Congress compared with the 4NCL league in terms of 'high-quality' chess, I have to say I'm even more disappointed after this weekend than I was at the end of the league. In terms of accounts being closed before, during and after the tournament, (at least) 2 ...

Re: Hugh Price

This is a very sad day for all of us in Cardiff. The WCU website, quoted above, underestimates Hugh's longevity with the Cardiff Club. He joined in 1938 and played his last game in September 2018. His influence won't be measured in mere years served, He was still coaching into his early nineties, at...

Re: 4NCL online - some chess!!!

Hi - to be more more precise, their entries have the lichess 'computer assistance' flag and no, I don't know if this was reason the teams withdrew - not all teams who have had players banned in the past 7 days withdrew. However, it seems like a possible reason.

Re: 4NCL online - some chess!!!

The quarter final line-up is a bit random, however. I guess that any annulment of wins/draws by players subsequently banned would be opening up too many cans of worms. For example, Bristol University, who finished 2nd in their Group with 13 match points, to secure their spot in the play-offs tonight...

Re: 4NCL Online

In response to Roger's point about comparing 4NCL results with OTB play, it can be quite illuminating, or at least interesting. Taking the combined scores for the 3 Correspondence players that I thought might do well before the event began (all about the same rating), they have a combined score of +...

Re: 4NCL Online

I don't know the answer to that, Ian, as I don't know who he/she is but if it's a 4NCL Div 1 player, the answer's no. Only one of my 20 has been banned from lichess to date, as far as I'm aware, which may underscore the lack of due diligence I've done or emphasise the difficulty in catching players ...
