I assume it *doesn't* include the first Lasker-Janowski match then?
Matt, if I understand it well, that match was not for the WC title, right? (If by "the first" match you mean the one in 1909)

Chess World Championships

Fantastic people at lichess.org compiled a list (liches studies actually) that contain every game from "Official" Chess World Championships. I find it really useful, and that is why I decided to share it here as I humbly believe it deserves to be in everybody's bookmark list: https://lichess.org/pag...

Brian, it was badly worded statement... I apologise. I should have written something like "... were available on the old website..." :) For the record, I just love the new website! :)

Re: Have the ECF replaced the old grades with the new ratings, at the wrong moment?

I think the ELO adoption by ECF should have been done many years ago... It is funny to see that even after so long people still come up with all sort of excuses, like one of the recent ones about percentage IF opponents were graded around 150 ECF.... Seriously guys... Out of 11997 members who got gr...

Re: Something to be concerned about?

If you do a personal risk assessment, unless you are willing to rigorously self isolate for the rest of your life, isn't the danger for the those not vaccinated of catching and even dying of COVID somewhat higher than the theoretical risk of unknown vaccine side effects? I understand your point as ...

Re: Something to be concerned about?

I was supposed to be captain of Pimlico teams in two leagues next season, as well as play for Albany in the Middlesex league, but If vaccination is required by these London leagues I will have to step down as captain and probably not even bother renewing my ECF membership as well. The whole thing is...

Re: How to play against engine-users on lichess

I suggest you just do your best and play the game to the best of your abilities. If your opponent is a cheater he/she will be banned eventually and that account will get closed (as is the case with your opponent - that account is closed on lichess). It is not the end of the world - it is not that yo...

What was your source of ECF data?

I presume it was the Master List before availability was denied by those who know best.
The monthly grades files (in CSV format) that are still available on the old ecfgrading.org.uk site. Last file was published 28.08.2020.

Re: Chess clubs by size

Year or so ago I wrote a parser of ECF data in Python that populates a MariaDB database. Unfortunately server that was running it is now down, and I do not have a copy of the database... The moment server is again up and running I will collect the data you need and attach here.

What else do you expect from a book with title starting with "Chess Bitch"?? Clearly the aim is to attract the audience with "wild", "sexist" stories...

Re: New ECF Rating Database

New site is definitely an improvement over the old one. I do not know if you remember, with the old one navigation was really limited - if you clicked somewhere there was no way back... I only wish the rating graph was done using chart.js or something similar (like FIDE), but I guess that is probab...

Re: Cheater or not - what do you think?

Once you eliminate the forced moves and the theory, the tests did not confirm any suspicious activity. One game was actually a walkover because the opponent was defaulted. Weird - I was actually watching that game LIVE, and I have a PGN of it. So how come the opponent "defaulted"? :D In fact, I was...

Re: Cheater or not - what do you think?

EDIT: And coincidentally here's one from a few hours after I posted, 46 moves played. I would expect a 2050+ ELO player to have such performance more frequently than 1560 ELO player. Being one I know how rare it is and how highly improbable it is to have two games without even a tiny mistake in 7 r...

Re: Cheater or not - what do you think?

Well, I did not want to offend anyone by giving names, etc. What I can tell you is that in one 42move (84ply) game PlayerB did not make a single mistake (inaccuracy, mistake or blunder). In another one, also 42moves he made just two tiny inaccuracies. I understand Joseph's point that when one blunde...
