Kasparov had a strong history prior to his first grading though. Botvinnik for one, Leonard Barden for another were raving about him from a young age eg didn't Botvinnik say something like the future of chess was in his hands? And Leonard predicted he would be world champion following Kasparovs perf...

I see that Carlsen gets 7 games as White, 6 as Black. Giri the other way round. Is this a significant advantage - especially given the lack of Black wins to date? I assume it isn't or they would choose to avoid it.

True, although chessbomb shows engine analysis as well - just watched the end of Danny Gormally's game, full of tactics that I couldn't have followed without the analysis.
