Re: Remembering IM Bob Wade OBE (10-iv-1921 29-xi-2008)

I was lucky enough to play him in a simul about 30 years ago in London. I somehow got into an ending which was clearly winning for me, something like a pawn or two up and a good position. He completely outplayed me and then kindly offered a draw when he could have carried on and won the game. I quic...

Re: Poor psychology?

I had the opposite problem. I was about 1800 OTB 30 years ago and was comfortable playing someone of a similar grade or lower but I was often beaten before I started against a higher graded player, say 1900+. I just couldn't get out of my head that they must be much better than me and they would the...

Re: Times cryptic chess clue

Colin - the Spectator can be very obscure so you may have it.

Geoff - ingenious, and maybe better than the real answer!

(More on why white goes first).

I can vaguely remember this coming up fairly recently. So I did a quick google search and I found this article:

You sound like you are playing chess because you play chess ie out of habit rather than enjoyment. I often get this - I play chess sometimes because I'm bored and not b...

Re: Remembering IM Bob Wade OBE (10-iv-1921 29-xi-2008)

I played Bob in a simultaneous over 30 years ago on London. I was doing well, ending up in an endgame 3 pawns up. The other games were finishing around me leaving just mine and someone else's. He recovered two of the three pawn deficit and then kindly offered me a draw. I nearly took his hand off.
