Re: Resigners...

... never won anything. On more than a few occasions I have considered resigning only to somehow end up winning/drawing. One particular example that sticks in my memory is in a rapidplay tournament against a strong junior feeling like I was being wiped off the board, when I spotted what I thought th...

Re: Decline of Evening Chess 17/18?

From my experience, I have reached the stage where, after an intense day of work, I can't face the prospect of travelling for maybe an hour, playing up to three hours of intense chess, travel back for another hour, getting home around midnight and then have to get up for work the next day. The only ...

Re: Once Upon a Time in a League Match

This reminds me of a time (this season) when I played a game where the clock was dodgy (or wound down) on one side, and we were well into the game before either of us noticed this. The net result was that my opponent had hardly used any time, and I had used a normal amount of time. I was not sure w...

I understand the organiser became busy with other chess commitments outside of the UK.

Re: London Chess League

You may want to remove the link to "London Rapidplay" from the "Recommended links" (and on any other sites you manage) as it is now looks defunct.

Re: Do you have to compete promotion to win ?

Players often play capturing or promoting moves two-handed. The laws are badly drafted and do not clearly make this entirely illegal. It appears quite clear to me: 4.1 Each move must be made with one hand only. I was involved in a time scramble about a year ago when my opponent was making captures ...

Neil Graham wrote:Tony Miles once reviewed Eric Schiller's book Unorthodox Chess Openings in two words: "Utter crap," which is about as concise a review of a bad chess book as you can get.
That's quite surprising given the opening he used to defeat Anatoly Karpov in the European Team Championship in Skara in 1980!

"There were thirty boards, but only ten women competitors."

Any thirty board match these days (apart from all-female matches) that could boast ten female competitors would be considered doing rather well.

Re: League Matches Between Teams Of Same Club

When I started playing for Guildford about 20 years ago we had FOUR teams in division 1 of the Border League so I hereby claim the record on hehalf of Guildford. A similar time ago Bourne End had four teams in division 1 (of 2) of the Buckinghamshire League. The following year the league was extend...

Re: Rules query - starting clock without moving

When the rule was introduced in Bucks , matches nominally scheduled to start at 19:30 could in one extreme example not start until 19:50, and there were other clubs which were not terribly prompt starters often because the room was used by somebody else first. What has actually happened is that the...

Re: Chessbase 10

I hadn't used it for a while, but I have the impression some of the features have been disabled unless you login. Needless to say, it considered my email address in a standard format of name@something.ispname.co.uk as invalid, so I was unable to test this. The reason for that is the regular express...
