Re: Cheating in chess

I apologise for lowering the tone of this very interesting thread, but I cannot help saying that every time I see one of Justin's posts I am amused by the juxtaposition of his strong (and to my mind entirely fair) views on cheating and his post signature!

Re: Cheating in chess

I think that Lichess will flag it as cheating immediately if it can see you have a Lichess analysis board open with the same position, so that is one possibility. I have heard (unconfirmed) that there have been false positives where another person is looking at the position from the same IP, althoug...

Re: Cheating in chess

I do not understand why there is such a resistance to organising OtB, to organising robust online events. Almost as if some players would rather see chess die and other players be deprived of the fun and experience, rather than see it played in a format they do not personally like. I think what you...

Re: Cheating in chess

I don't get the argument. It is similar to saying: with this measure, 1% of cheaters will still be able to cheat, hence this measure is horrible. Let's not implement it, and have 100% of cheaters cheat, because is a measure is not perfect, it's not worth having. I think you can make a more persuasi...

Thanks, that's useful. What are "blurs"?
The opposite of focusing a window - switching to a different active window.

Re: Arbitration question

Thanks for indulging my curiosity. I'm glad you aren't actually having to deal with all these issues!

Re: Arbitration question

A question for Soheil - I've read this thread and the scenarios in it for about a year and always wondered - are these issues that have come up in tournaments you have run, or are they theoretical?

Re: Membership Renewal

Thank you to those above who explained the position in response to my query. Without trying to be either defeatist or blase about the consequences, it sounds like, if the worst comes to the worst and the ECF largely collapsed or had to go into hibernation, it would be relatively straightforward for ...

Re: Membership Renewal

Can I ask a genuine question? Let's say the ECF doesn't get enough subscriptions this season and has to cut back or shut. Is there anything that would stop it reopening once clubs reopen and people once again want to be graded and therefore pay their subs? Are there assets that would be permanently ...

Re: Cheating in chess

I notice that Chess.com have awarded me rating points as they have identified an opponent as a cheat. This seems rather unfair, as in the game in question, we played a normal opening and I just overlooked a one-move threat on about move 15... My understanding is that if they identify a player as a ...

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

If some people are unprepared to suffer a tiny risk from coming into contact with a pen then that is up to them. But it is not a reasonable reason to prevent the going ahead of a tournament at all. But if your tournament was only just breaking even previously, some people are choosing to stay home ...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Is there actually anything prohibiting league chess restarting? My understanding is that the issue is that (1) not enough players feel chess is worth the risk to make it a particularly compelling economic case for the venues, (2) some existing venues are too small for social distancing/reasonable pr...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Anyone hearing anything about OTB chess starting in UK ? Adam Raoof has posted here about starting up again in Autumn, but I suspect a big issue is player numbers. With talk of a second wave I suspect a lot of people will stay away for a while yet (especially since older players might feel more at ...

Re: Cheating in chess

- it's just an illustration that information available to the platforms other than the moves can be highly probative. How sure are you of that I think the general statement I made (ie that non-move data can be probative) should be pretty uncontroversial. It's not far above saying "evidence is evide...
