Re: Cheating in chess

[...] John (and Matthew) - thank you for your explanations. I think my nervousness about this comes from the fact that we are largely obliged to take it on trust that everything has been done properly and that the proof is there, whether that's by a platform or by Professor Regan. Professor Regan i...

Re: Cheating in chess

Here are the frequencies of their playing the best through the tenth-best move in such many-choice positions: Rank / Pct. 1 / 17.76%, 2 / 13.22%, 3 /9.95%, 4 / 7.66%, 5 / 6.25%, 6 / 5.18%, 7 / 4.41%, 8 / 4.55%, 9 /3.50%, 10 / 3.03%, 11+ / 24.49%..." I take that to mean among the players FIDE-rated ...

Re: Cheating in chess

Single games must exist that are impossible for anyone except engines or the very best players to produce. [...] "This is the same for OTB and online and the reason is that everyone is capable of a perfect game." Any 1700 FIDE-rated player may be capable of playing a near-perfect game against signi...

Re: The next world champion?

I still see Nakamura as the biggest threat. His unpredictability is his lethal weapon. It is difficult to prepare for Nakamura as a result. I wonder whether unpredictability is really an effective weapon in the format of a world championship match? Scoring a surprise win isn't enough - he would nee...

Re: Invisible pieces

A talented seven year old girl ( or boy) should be left well alone to enjoy the game and not hot-housed by suggesting that she ( or he) can be the best in the world. That is, if you want the kid to have any sort of normal life. On the other hand, children (mostly) need some pushing to put in the wo...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Tim Spanton >Those of you who have seen my criticisms of the decision to cancel this year's Hastings congress may be interested in a response from sponsor Caplin's chief executive John Ashworth< That completely correct decision was made by the Hastings ICC sub-committee. Neither John, nor I are mem...

Re: Cheating in chess

I apologise for lowering the tone of this very interesting thread, but I cannot help saying that every time I see one of Justin's posts I am amused by the juxtaposition of his strong (and to my mind entirely fair) views on cheating and his post signature!

Re: Cheating in chess

I think that Lichess will flag it as cheating immediately if it can see you have a Lichess analysis board open with the same position, so that is one possibility. I have heard (unconfirmed) that there have been false positives where another person is looking at the position from the same IP, althoug...

Re: Cheating in chess

I do not understand why there is such a resistance to organising OtB, to organising robust online events. Almost as if some players would rather see chess die and other players be deprived of the fun and experience, rather than see it played in a format they do not personally like. I think what you...

Re: Cheating in chess

I don't get the argument. It is similar to saying: with this measure, 1% of cheaters will still be able to cheat, hence this measure is horrible. Let's not implement it, and have 100% of cheaters cheat, because is a measure is not perfect, it's not worth having. I think you can make a more persuasi...

Thanks, that's useful. What are "blurs"?

Re: Arbitration question

A question for Soheil - I've read this thread and the scenarios in it for about a year and always wondered - are these issues that have come up in tournaments you have run, or are they theoretical?

Re: Membership Renewal

Thank you to those above who explained the position in response to my query. Without trying to be either defeatist or blase about the consequences, it sounds like, if the worst comes to the worst and the ECF largely collapsed or had to go into hibernation, it would be relatively straightforward for ...
