Re: Lockdown and Queen's Gambit have boosted my online rating

My online rating on PlayChess is higher than my ECF or FIDE ratings. This maybe because in online chess my approach, is to always to try & win, resulting in a much higher % win rate .....whilst OTB I am much more cautious, & not happy to risk losing several games in succession. I am afraid that onl...

The results are out on the official website.

Congratulations to all winners and podiums, and thanks to the organisers for an event well managed.

Re: Tournament rankings: some statistical questions

The most obvious problem is the impact of draws, but having a qualifier and championships is also hugely beneficial for online events. Banning a player after the qualifying rounds is (potentially) much less disruptive than allowing them to compete all the way through to the finish. I didn't make a ...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021

Does anyone here knows if the results across all sections are final and published?
I can only see the chess-result rankings, but I was under the impression they are not final and that the event's page would list all the winners.

I did email the organisers, but haven't heard back from them yet.

Tournament rankings: some statistical questions

Thread only for those who like to see things through a mathematical lens  In a Swiss tournament, if I recall correctly you need Roundup(Ln2(X)) round to determine the winner with X players So for 50 players, you would need (Ln2(50), rounded up which is 6 rounds. If you want to get the top Y pl...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021

In case the organisers do read the forum: Thank you for organising the event, it was long overdue, and as some said above, the Zoom finals were fantastically managed. Hopefully OtB will be back and we will not need another one, but if we do, I would definitely recommend it to everyone. Thank you gai...

Question about arbiters

I was thinking what are the pros/cons of becoming an arbiter (as some other chess parents seem to be). Thought it would be nice to be able to help organisers and do something while my son is playing. Whenever OTB restarts. Some questions in no particular order: Key question is: how good do you actua...

Re: Same position, different assessment

Seems there are a ton of different potential reasons: * Different CPU threads having different speed/load * Stockfish keeping a transposition status, so 2 identical position will have diferent continuation (one of them will be suboptimal). * and this technical explanation: However, in fact Stockfish...

The Southend Congress for 2021 due to be held at Easter has been cancelled.
Is confidence that low that we may go back to tier 1 by then?

Re: Media comments on chess

I have often wondered why they changed the original name, 'Searching for Bobby Fischer', to 'Innocent Moves' in Britain. I always recommend this film to parents with aspiring child chessplayers. It is one everybody can watch and enjoy. Josh became an IM, but turned his attention to martial arts. Th...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021

Many thanks Wadih... yes, I have only entered the Rapidplay qualifier, so you've given me a very helpful lead... however, I don't understand how I find 'the right tournament section "club"' ... I've looked in "English Chess Federation - Members" Club on chess.com but that doesn't seem to help, othe...
