Re: How to develop England Juniors?

Another factor could be the reducing strength of the junior events at the British; back when I was playing these (around 1990) the events where very strong; nowadays because they let any Tom, Dick or Harry into the championship has impacted this; back then it was extremely difficult to qualify, so ...

Re: How to develop England Juniors?

Thanks makes sense now.

This means that in the 12 months from October 2019 to September 2020, only 7 20-year olds played at least one fide rated game?
That includes at least 6 months of pre-covid...

How many 20 year olds are active in the ECF database using the 12 month period?

Here are some stats for you. Make of them what you will.

Not sure what it shows: it can't be all players (unless the unit is in thousands?), so what subset of players is it?

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Received the following update re Stiges chess, which is scheduled in Spain for Dec 12-23: Thank you for your interest in our Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival 2020. Re: Cheating in chess

I see that one of the players in the 4NCL Online Autumn Congress who reached 4/4 is now shown on chess-results with 0/4 and not paired in the remaining rounds. His games are not on lichess when you look through his opponent's results for them, so I assume his lichess account has been closed. They h...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Although this was only the first time I was tested this was 100% my third time having corona virus... I am sorry so say that, but it is very dangerous to make such claims with only 1 test? How can a non specialist, without test, determine that it was covid and not flu, pneumonia, a bad cold, anothe...

Re: Media comments on chess

I'm slightly surprised there hasn't been more comment about "The Queen's Gambit" film as it seems to be receiving very favourable reviews, something calculated to increase general interest in chess. I watched the first episode, and the chess part is fun for me (although the main character is way to...

Re: How to develop England Juniors?

I think the sense of community goes a long way. In England it’s less likely that young people are in friendship groups with other strong players the same age .... Yes I did note that a team/community goes a long way to give them hooked and motivated to stretch their limits. Thing is, as a few paren...

Re: How to develop England Juniors?

Is the explanation partially due to almost all England juniors having low FIDE ratings relative to their ECF grades/ratings in which case, if the ECF figures are the more accurate indicators of their playing strengths , the FIDE ratings consistently under-estimate those playing strengths? Yes, ther...

Re: How to develop England Juniors?

The Europeans are possibly wondering why they are trailing behind India. I ignored other countries on purpose, as the economics and state support levels are very different in India, Russia, Armenia, turkey, etc... I compared countries of similar (relatively) sizes, economies, state intervention, et...
