Re: In a hot air balloon who would you rather be left with?

Nigel, because if necessary he could operate the balloon by speech alone.

Re: Printing of a chess game score affected by Word for Windows's foibles

Anthony, I suspect the answer is it depends on which version of Word you are using. Try googling how to turn off proofing for <your version of> Word.

Re: Announcing mate

Paul, whilst no doubt there are both stronger and weaker bridge players than you around, your self description as "a distinctly intermediate strength player" is rather self-deprecating for one who is clearly above average even amongst those who play the game competitively. There is no more need to t...

Re: 25th 4NCL Weekend Congress

A bus apparently runs to 1 mile away - service back on Sunday is every two hours. Far from ideal that travel by public transport is so inconvenient A quarter mile, if that, is closer. The bus stops for the 85 are close to the roundabout from which the drive up to the hotel and golf club leaves the ...

Re: 5 Minutes on the Clock

8.1.1 In the course of play each player is required to record his own moves and those of his opponent in the correct manner, move after move, as clearly and legibly as possible, in the algebraic notation (Appendix C), on the ‘scoresheet’ prescribed for the competition. 8.4 If a player has less than...

Re: White wins in two moves and other matters

Which seems to translate to "Don't blame FIDE if arbiters fail to ignore their advice". As I have said, I think SPP were foolish to offer a suggestion which was not a regulation - this only ever leads to trouble. The addendum "but if you don't like this, do something that you do like" will always b...

Re: White wins in two moves and other matters

From the FIDE handbook C.04.2 General handling rules for Swiss Tournaments B Initial Order 2 Before the first round the players are ranked in order of, respectively Strength (rating) FIDE-title (GM-IM- WGM-FM-WIM-CM-WFM-WCM-no title) alphabetically (unless it has been previously stated that this cri...

Re: Chess Prevention tax £ 8.33 a game

The Board accepted the proposal to introduce three free games per subscription year and abolish game fee. Leagues will be invoiced £25 for every non-member who plays more than three games. It was agreed that a formal proposal should be put to the Finance Council meeting. A welcome development, allo...

I went by train to Lancaster, I can't do that to NuL as it hasn't got a train station Though it is only a short bus ride or moderate walk from Stoke-on-Trent station from which there is a frequent bus service. Or use Crewe (or Stafford) from which the busses are less frequent and take longer. Must ...

Re: Arbiters (jobs for) proposal.

Kent are not the only county missing from the list of level2/3 arbiters. Middlesex' omission may be down to it being regarded as part of London, and we must note that one of the arbiters seems to be of no known abode. However the list given earlier also shows no such arbiter in Buckinghamshire, Ches...

Re: Questions on conduct during a game

Allowing the recording of moves before they are played would allow the scoresheet to be used as an aide memoire. Exactly what aid is being given would vary between players. Traditionally the move was written down before a final blunder check. However some players would use the scoresheet to keep a r...

Re: WHERE IN THE UK TO PLAY CHESS?

Peter, Michael Farthing's advice is excellent. At most levels games are determined by the last mistake, not the first one. Consequently the win goes to (s)he who operates best under their own resources, not the player with the greater opening knowledge. By all means learn a very little opening theor...

Brendan, I'm using Chrome and getting the same result as Mike - the link to the alleged results page works, taking me to a page within the Docklands Chess Club site. But the links within that page have no effect. On the other hand seeing as they appear intended to take one elsewhere within the page ...
