Re: Forms of communication?

my main gripe was the incredible meanness of some players in providing a fresh envelope. The same envelope could go to and fro, collecting multiple stamps and postmarks Ah, yes. I remember this well. Multiple postmarks, and the envelope falling to pieces. Times change though. Today you'd be applaud...

Re: 2020 Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour Finals

Today's 2nd sets were very one-sided affairs. Nakamura crushed Dubov 3-1, and puts him one set short of the Final. Meanwhile in the other match, Carlsen swept Ding Liren off the board. It would have been 3-0, but Carlsen sealed the set with a generous half. That leaves matters all-square after a tur...

Re: 2020 Legends of chess 21 July to 5 August

No idea if anyone's watching, or if anyone cares, but Carlsen has just blasted Nepo clean out of his socks to win the Final 2 - 0 in sets. That said, Nepo did roll up Carlsen yesterday in a 21-move slaughter. But you got the impression Carlsen was just messing. Nepo twice punted 6 Rg1 in a Najdorf. ...

Re: Julian Farrand

What shocking news. Prof Julian Farrand was the most lovely man. He used to be a regular member of the erstwhile Barbican Youth deep into his 70s. I didn't know him well, but when our paths crossed at the 4NCL we'd exchange the happiest respectful banter. Condolences

Just the one, eh? I've played through a number of those games. And I'm saying nothing. Absolutely nothing

Re: 4NCL online - some chess!!!

The problem of gross inequalities of strength (ie lopsidedness) is that, apart from the damage to sporting competitiveness, there's a colossal disincentive for strong teams to enter, or for further teams from existing entrants. As understood, such fresh entrants would be asked to spend their time wa...

Would new teams always come in at the bottom?
That's my understanding yes, including any teams who withdrew during the recently completed league.
Awkward. No? Won't this make Div 5 hugely lop-sided; and thereafter, Div 4 etc, as strong teams (including new entrants) work their way through?

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Very correct. And totally impractical. Who'd want to undertake all this faff just for a game of chess? And it still doesn't eliminate the risks impacting on key at-risk groups. Good try, mes amis, but no cigar

Re: 2020 Chessable Masters

Something just happened in rd 2 of the Semis. Ding Liren - Carlsen 1-0. Not a transmission error, I think. Game score: 1 c4 e6; 2 g3 Qg5; 3 Bg2 Qxd2+; 4 Qxd2 1-0 [later] OK, sorted. Carlsen threw the game after Ding Liren lost on time in rd 1, following a disconnect, in a drawn position. Kudos Magnus!

I would like to thank Mike Truran, Alex Holowczak, and the entire 4NCL online team, including Shohreh Bayat, Matthew Carr, Tim Dickinson, Andy Howie and Dave Thomas, for both creating the 4NCL online team competition and running it so efficiently, with strong support from the vast majority of playe...
