The main thing Hou Yifan would need to be concerned about is not to violate the terms of her visa. Rather than worry about it, simpler to say no?

[It is suggested that] "users are given a 'desirability' rating that determines where they appear in the list of suitors that flashes up on users’ smartphones, with someone judged by Tinder’s algorithms to be highly desirable getting in before someone who is not. "Tinder admitted last week that it ...

Re: Div 3 North 2018-19

Is there still the option of running separate squads? That might be a way around it? We faced this problem a few years back after our 'A's got dumped back in Div 3N, joining our recently-formed 'B's. We were planning a third team too. So, at our National Strategic Planning Committee, held before ou...

Re: World Teams 2019

A word in praise of Luke McShane

He currently stands +3, and a draw in rd 9 will give him the Board 2 prize (if there is one). Given our second slot has been an under-performing problem for some time, Luke deserves plenty of credit for solving it.

Re: World Teams 2019

Howell needs to turn round [+57.00] if he's to square the match. Probably won't, given he's playing on the increment

Re: World Teams 2019

McShane has just blown all advantage, subject to his opponent finding a fairly straightforward reply (ha! which he didn't find; McShane retains his plus)

Howell is very close to a win though

Re: World Teams 2019

Unfortunately, I think Speelman missed that he would lose the c-pawn - thought he could protect and get 2 pieces for a rook if it were taken. [SetUp "1"] [FEN "r2qr1k1/pp2ppbp/5np1/n7/1QbP4/5NP1/PB3PBP/RNR3K1 w - - 0 15"] After Rxc4, what does Black play? ...Nd5, I reckon. And if 2. Qa4 b5; 3. Qxb5...

Re: World Teams 2019

I've just been told (by Malcolm Pein) that all the ENG team are struggling with heavy colds. It's minus 15 outside in Astana. This may go some way to explaining aspects of their performance (quick draws etc); but also reflects well on their resilience. By contrast, Nigel Short is on FIDE business in...

Re: Harassment and Toxic Behavior on Chess.com

My sympathies to the journalist-player concerned. But she's a bit wet behind the ears, not to say years behind the times. The online (& thereafter offline and real time) abuse, harassment, stalking, doxxing and even death threats towards women have been long-term features of the largely male-dominat...

Re: The ECF Academy tender

Regulation No 1 requires this process, regardless of what the Board or anyone else may think of its merits. Regulation No 1 concerns process alone. In practical terms, it's barely worth the paper it's written on. Clause 1.8 gets you off the hook. Use the opportunity, and get the Regs redrafted to f...

Re: The ECF Academy tender

The trouble with a competitive tendering process such as this is that it assumes a viable market. That is, it assumes there are numerous suppliers willing to bid competitively, and to bear the costs of bidding including the risk of failure. The weaker the supply-side of the market, the more burdenso...

Re: Chess Put Forward To Join Paris 2024 Olympic Games

There are five people in my household. All play chess. But only one is a chess-player. All can ride a bike too. But none is a cyclist.

Don't think these surveys get us very far until they decide what they're measuring
