Re: Media comments on chess

I have now finished reading 'PLAY IT AS IT LAYS' Joan Didion is a fabulous essayist, literary critic, and well-regarded novelist. The book cover has a great history in photographic art. The visible male is Marcel Duchamp. The all-too-visible player is Eve Babitz, a young free-wheeling student from ...

Re: Division One 2018-19

Game of the weekend in Div 1? A big shout out for... Laura Stoeri v. Syringa Camp Laura is the highly-rated Swiss player. Syringa's main role (chess-wise anyway) is to drive Imogen, her talented daughter, to chess matches. Yet, this weekend, Syringa found herself pitched into Div 1 for Blackthorne R...

I can't really explain our margin of victory yesterday
I can. Some very good chess was played throughout the team, not least in your own game. Impressive.

Arguably our best-ever match performance - against strong opponents who've duffed us up in the past

Re: Dominic Lawson on Question Time (BBC Radio 4) now

Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion, including 'people like Gerard' who apparently would encourage the poor to gamble, smoke and drink Now that is a foolish comment, not least by your normal standards. Nowhere in his criticism of Lawson does Gerard Killoran advocate the wasting of the poor's...

Re: Tata Steel Wijk Aan Zee Fri 11th to Sun 27th Jan 2019

In today's final unfinished game Shankland is about to beat Rapport Just how useless are you as clairvoyant, analyst, and informant? Granted, after 74. Nf8???????? [-6.80], you might imagine Shankland stood well. But this is Wijk-aan-Zee, not the Ambleside & District Div 4. So anything can happen. ...

Re: Really??

Great result; looks like promotion is on the cards? A long, long way to go yet. Div 2 is the hardest league in so many ways. If we were to gain promotion again, it would be met with mixed feelings frankly. It would also mean that, a decade on from entering Div 3N, we'd never have played in the same...

Re: Really??

I'm sure. It's 5.20pm now. But online, it remains 1.5 - 0.5 to SoA (Carleton winning; Jackson halving)

Re: Really??

Heh, I thought it was just me hanging on last night :) We may be 60+ (& 70+) veterans for the greater part. But we rarely roll over. Our Saturday late-finishes ran to 60, 70, and 80 moves. As I write, it's nearly 5.00pm on Sunday. Most other matches in the Pools have long finished. But in SoA v AA, ...

Re: Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer

Peter Swinnerton-Dyer gets the full obit here . I never met him, but knew of him - by reputation, and by deed. He emerges well - a good man, a competent head of the UGC, and a committed liberal in the defence of universities and their Enlightenment values. We can't get enough of them these days. On...

Thanks David; tough weekend for SoA by the look of it
Yes, indeed. A state of affairs that has led to some disquiet among my colleagues. Why, they ask, do they get drawn against both undefeated teams in the same weekend? Still, we'll do as we always do, and lump it
