Justin, I think tablas in Spanish means draw. I once had a book with that title anyways
So what? Tablero de ajedrez means 'chessboard'

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

If AD and GM team up, which is entirely possible now, then I hope MP and NS will do the same Yes, it would solve a lot of problems, and make plenty of sense - for many of us, certainly I'm not sure of the current relationship between Malcolm and Nigel The relationship remains civil, possibly cordia...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

The Russian Chess Federation has reported that Arkady Dvorkovich will run for the post of FIDE President. (Kevin Spraggett had said yesterday there were rumours Ilyumzhinov's ticket could be replaced by another from the Russian Chess Federation.) This is exceptionally significant, I'd have thought....

Surely the simplest solution is to say 'for the purposes of calculating prizes, ratings <2050 will be counted as 2050.'
Pfft. That's far too 'bleedin' obvious'

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

"Sutor, ne ultra crepidam iudicaret" I doubt that there is any such quotation I'm pretty sure you're right. It's a 'compound' quotation, assembled (not entirely by me!) from several vaguely attributable sources in which neither 'sutor' nor 'iudicaret' always feature, and where 'supra' often substit...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

Am I alone in thinking the whole article seemed short on positive reasons for supporting Nigel? I also thought the piece was short of positive messages I don't think 'accentuating the positive' is going to feature that prominently in this campaign. Let's not forget that Prof Aidrian Siegel, FIDE Tr...

Re: Ethics under Suspicion

Yet further proof, if any were needed, that even the best chessplayers are not fit to be allowed out alone. Quite simply, they don't know enough, don't read enough, don't think enough beyond their esoteric competence. Sutor, ne ultra crepidam iudicaret

Re: 2018 Altibox Norway

Nothing like kicking a man when he is down (literally), is there? Please don't be more sour and foolish than is standard for you! But how predictable your intervention. I'm well aware of David Welch's circumstances, and gave thought to them before posting. Nothing I have said involves "kicking a ma...

Re: 2018 Altibox Norway

Was bit shocked to realise that Carlsen is now 27. Where has the time gone! When I was planning and organising the big Liverpool international events that ran 2006-08, Carlsen had just arrived on the scene. We kicked off in 2006 with the 2nd EU Championships (eventually won by Nigel Short). I was r...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

So are we suggesting he's not an improvement on Kirsan?! I'm not sure what metrics might be used for assessing kleptocrats - weight of bullion? proportion of GDP? suitcases of cash? Prof Adrian Siegel will be able to guide Dr Aguinaldo Jaime in handling insolent questions from Nigel Short on the ma...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

Even though Aguinaldo Jaime was a member of the winning ticket four years ago, I know nothing about him He's mentioned briefly in this document... https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/FOREIGNCORRUPTIONREPORTFINAL710.pdf Good find. It makes alarming reading: "Dr Aguinaldo Jaime, a senior Angol...
