Re: British Championship 2018

I'd like to express my big appreciation for the efforts of the game-inputters. As an observer following the progress of friends and colleagues in the various Senior championships, I was delighted to be able to access play-thru game scores within a day or two of each round. That's good going. I'm gra...

Re: Shreyas Royal breaks U10 record, poses ECF a question

More light thrown on the decision from The Times this evening. Plenty of interesting quotes too TEXT START Home Office lifts stalemate so chess prodigy Shreyas Royal can stay An Indian chess prodigy and his family will be allowed to stay in Britain after the Home Office had a sudden change of heart ...

Re: Shreyas Royal breaks U10 record, poses ECF a question

Shreyas will be 14-15 at that time, so the problems suggested by Ian Thompson above should not arise Let's hope other 'problems' don't arise meanwhile. As every parent knows, charming and thoroughly biddable 10-year olds, expressing huge latent promise, can turn within a few years into surly, trucu...

Still, I look forward to Justin's blog praising the Tory media insiders on the ECF board and their friend Ray for influencing the government :-)

Re: Shreyas Royal breaks U10 record, poses ECF a question

The Times today carries a news piece, then the following Leader article. The news piece is cool on Shreyas's prospects, referring to "a brick wall" in the Home Office. The Leader is aggressively supportive though. So much for the formal journalism: 'below the line' comments are far less encouraging...

Nah, just gently teasing. Now Ian's corrected his post, I'll delete mine. Had I the presence of mind, I'd have PM'd rather than prompted in public. But I didn't

Would you care to revisit your post, and perform a little edit. I know it's the Seniors, and all that. But you were playing in Hull not Sheffield
Whoops!
Nearly there. One corrected. Just check the 2nd line, and you'll be done

He came across very well
So well, in fact, that I've received two emails this morning from non-playing friends, asking if I know about him. If the case is cutting through to the general public (my sample of two is a straw in that wind), then Shreyas has a chance, albeit a small chance still

Re: Shreyas Royal breaks U10 record, poses ECF a question

Sorry to be gloomy here. Many people are trying to do the right thing by Shreyas (& family). Indeed, the ECF, MPs, and chess journalists are doing the right thing, in my opinion. BUT time is fast running out, if I've understood things correctly. And it's the 'silly season', with politicians away and...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

Either way, and anyway, Makropoulos is in a legacy squeeze, caught between 'clean hands' Short and 'fresh face' Dvorkovich. The squeeze, which Makropoulos is poorly positioned to resist, is on his ownership of the past. To be effective though, given many delegates are content to have the corruption ...

Does anyone know what caused the change to the board two pairing in the last round of the British over 65 Seniors? Error-strewn zeitnot shambles in Jackson - Longson where 78 Rxg7+ by Sheila won on the spot (78...Kxg7; 79 Qd4+). But after 78...Kh8? from Sarah, Sheila found TWMOB with 79 Rg8+?? when 79...Kxg8; 80 Qg5+ Kf8/h8 wins back the R - but 79 Qg5+ Kf7 doesn't. Sarah got it right. So halved by perpetual
