Re: Irritating habits of juniors -a brief list

There's probably a FIDE bye-law somewhere that allows you, with the Arbiter's approval of course, to claim time on the clock while punching them straight in the face. If that doesn't satisfy, you'll just have to try the Jeremy Corbyn death stare.

More Brexit-IAGOCOT from The Times again A minister compares the Conservative leader to a chess player with only a king left on the board, who is powerless but still hanging on. “She’s in a situation where every move she makes worsens the national predicament. We still basically have no agreed gover...

Re: DIV 3 North..more teams wanted..

I get a feeling that a perverse logic is at work here; an unintended consequence of good planning. The initial expectation was that two 16-team Divs 3 (3N & 3S) would incentivise teams to shift North in search of promotion. That's sound thinking; and it happened initially. BUT...what goes up, must c...

Re: Chess Names in Robert Ludlum Novels

And since we're on the subject - well, I am anyway - there's this novel, long-listed for the Booker prize this year . Three parts through the book (a quality read, btw), a mother seeks some rare face time with her son. She decides to talk about chess (as mothers do  ). The conversation turns t...

Fabulous, Gerard, just fabulous! Though the play at Chester is reported to be erratic.... Ha! Nothing has changed in 84 years then! Chester CC is my club these days. It's the club's centenary next year, and we're planning a weekend tourney, inter alia . This item will doubtless find its way to our w...
