Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

Overruled. Overruled. By pluckily he stuck in there. Ah yes, such integrity. Such dedication to financial probity that he stuck it out. A real FIDE trooper! Frankly, an empty crisp packet could do a better job as Treasurer

Re: Media comments on chess

I think Scheveningen and Groningen are both relatively easy This is absolutely not true. Groningen is relatively easy for us, sounding something like Khroninger . But Scheveningen is a different matter altogether. The 'Sch' is thoroughly hard for us to reach; and distinctively hard for Germans. Hen...

Re: Blackburne and the endgame

Reckon there’s possibly a distinction to be drawn between having the ending, and being forced into the ending Good point, which renders Blackburne's claim - that he'd never met the ending in 70,000-80,000 games - pretty valueless because, unable to win it, he'd have been easily good enough to avoid...

Re: Blackburne and the endgame

I wonder how many chess players have gone through their whole career without having to play this ending How many? The overwhelming majority, I'd think. We had this discussion a few years back. It arose in the context of Mike Truran teaching his then young son (Joe?) to solve the ending in a couple ...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

do you have the remotest idea of what you're talking about? Yes, of course I do how many employees do you believe FIDE has? Quite irrelevant how many I believe FIDE has. It's only relevant how many FIDE believes it has. Judging only from its website, FIDE employs or appears to employ about two doze...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

Possibly not the best use of a person's time to fret about Nigel abolishing the stalemate rule when Nigel has promised to abolish so much more, starting with that tottering pile of secrecy, incompetence and self-reproducing bureaucracy called FIDE. He's called for the dismissal of the entire Kirsan-...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

Re: the leader in The Times : No mention of Makropoulos and mostly about Ilyumzhinov - not much actually about Short. Is this in the print edition as well? I'm sure it will be in the print edition. No surprise the items are light on detail. Most readers will only support a general interest in the g...

Times Leader article - full text. It isn't every day chess makes it to a Times leader piece. (Link in Roger's post above. The other article doesn't say much) _____________________________________________ Good Move Nigel Short’s bid to run world chess deserves support from all who love the game Ches...

Re: FIDE internal fighting

Hhmm. Issues. Malcolm Pein is, I understand, on Makro's slate Over to the all-wise ECF Board. And, of course, to the all-wise Forum :D [later: just discovered] One issue is that Short will be seeking the endorsement of the English Chess Federation, which now has IM Malcolm Pein as its delegate. Pein...

Re: Division One 2017-18

Tense stuff in the D pool, rd 11. Barbican 2 v. Alba - winner stays up; draw advantage to Alba. Currently, deep into the sixth hour, it stands 3.5 - 3.5 with Greet - Morrison in play. Greet looks to have the draw in hand [0.10]; and Morrison may have just blundered, pressing for a win. Indeed, he ha...

Re: Division One 2017-18

Alsina Leal - Howell

Match hangs on this, down in the eighth hour. It's drawn, but...ah...the increment. Howell was facing a 50-move settlement, but captured the final pawn at #140. So 50 more to come in K+R v K+N

[later] pfft...not even close. Draw at #186
