Re: Media comments on chess

Kleinwort Benson took a number of us to see CHESS - TH MUSICAL shortly after i opened. Lev Alburt and Genadi Sosonko were in the group. They were quite scathing about the plot line of the Russian player returning to Russia. 'Nobody would ever do that once having left'.' Of course, Boris did precisel...

Re: Media comments on chess

I doubt he is playing FIDE Rated chess.
But when implants into the brain become common, that may prove to be the end of competitive chess.

Re: Chess and Coronation Street

Keep us up to date if chess is back on Coronation Street. They treated the game reasonably well the last time I saw it.

I saw an ad called 'BE GAMBLE AWARE. It uses chess, as so often, to legitimise their concerns.
How dare they? Chess is NOT a gambling game

TV AD OPTICAL EXPRESS
This ad included an image of a chess position. It seemed to me irrelevant to the ad about improved sight.

Re: Major investment to transform future of English chess announced

Personally I prefer giant sets and boards fixed to the ground, as can be seen at such places as Hastings, Twickenham, Lanzarote, Sydney. Normal sized tables with byo sets are highly successful in Washington Square and Central Park in NY. I don't know how Clapham Common works, but it was/is highly su...

Re: Cheating in chess

I have been predicting implanted micro-chips for years. I presume then that shielding the whole playing hall from the internet would not help. The other problem, at the highest levels, is that the players are just too strong. A draw is too likely an outcome. Surely this is one of Magnus's concerns? ...

Re: Amateur/Master distinction

Consider Hastings. 1895 was before any ratings or titles existed, apart from the World Champion. Entries must have been invited based on reputations and perceived quality of games. Move on some years. All the tournaments were round robins. Still no ratings or official titles. Fairly early in Fischer...

Re: Media comments on chess

Something occurs to me. One or more of you may have available an illustration relating to History of the Laws of Chess.
That would be very useful. The book is due to be published July 2024.

Re: Amateur/Master distinction

Nobody seems to have responded to this query about master and amateur in late Victorian times. Until the 1950S, there was no formal definition of the term ' master; nor indeed of GM. Amateur surely meant, as now, somebody who plays chess but doesn't expect to win money and indeed may not play for mo...

Re: Lost Souls ?

The photo provided by Ian Hunnable identified tree people I knew well. Ivor Smith, David Sherman and Roland Payne. I knew David Sherman before I ever played chess, as an 11 year old in 1950. We met up again in 1955 at a BH Wood Congress. It took a litle time for us to realise we had been friends bef...

Simonn. Could you please post the recording of MASTER MIND on BBC2, the Musical CHESS It was the first item on the show. The very young-looking contestant did quite well in that section. I only caught the lst fragment of the questions as I went to dinner here in Tenerife. You could send it to me dir...
