Re: Media comments on chess

Kevin > travel from Yorkshire to London every Thursday to play chess, and are incredibly good (one beat a Russian GM).< That all seems wildly improbable. Travel to London on a Thursday to play chess. Even in the 70s that would normally have been Friday for weekend tournaments and Saturday for county...

Re: Media comments on chess

Matt >I think it was Larsen who said top players like himself should only resign when it is obvious to the spectators why they have done so.< It was indeed Bent who said that. I have had visions of his going up to spectators when it was his move, enquiring, 'Now you do understand why I am going to r...

World Snooker Championship on Eurosport tday.
Commentator:' If this were a chess game, Maflin might be inclined to resign'. I am sure he meant the individual frame, not the whole match.

That was a very accurate analogy. In a spectator situation, Chess players often do resign too early, in my view.

Geoff C >I watched The House on 92nd Street (1945) <
You have found one that Bob Basalla has not seen. He collates all references to chess in the movies.

Re: Media comments on chess

Monday's Daily Telegraph.
LORENZO FRAQUELLI wrote an article on Brazilian ju-jitsu
'It's like an extremely physical version of chess - i's all about grappling, rather than punching or kicking, and there are a near-infinite number of techniques, counters and re-counters to learn.'

Re: Chess references in Films

Laurence Harvey was the principal guest actor in that old Colombo film - if memory serves me correct.

Simon > Stars David Oyelowo. < David Oyelowo may well be the best known actor in Queen of Katwe. But he plays the part of the arbiter who teaches her chess. The girl is the main character. Jovanka told me she has met the girl who plays for the Ugandan women's team. Great play is made in the film tha...

Re: Syd Kalinsky

I attended Syd's funeral by zoom today. There were 111 participants. They will be holding 'Shiva' for 4 days, presumably from Sunday. That is where the official mourners receive guests who come to pay their respects. In lock-down perhaps this is limited to the immediate family. Sid had 4 children an...

Re: Senior Tournaments in 2021

I am considering holding the English Senior Championships in England at a venue that will become very convenient for me - if I move. The venue is 30000 sq ft and thus would normally be big enough for 150 chess players, perhaps 75 this year. I have just this moment thought of another possibility. I, ...

Re: Media comments on chess

CRITICAL THINKING I saw this 2020 film on Sky/Virgin channel Greats Friday at 4.25pm. I only noticed what it was about immediately before the programme and thus could not provide advance notice. It is a typical US High School story of pupils becoming strong chess players and going on to win the US S...

Monday 5 April ITV 3 rerun of WYCLIFFE the pilot episode of a detective series, set in Cornwall. Early in the 100 minute episode you see two men playing chess. It went too quickly to see whether the moves made sense or had anything to do with the ensuing plot. Tuesday 6 April TV Ad for San Miguel.2 ...

Re: Laws of Chess - changes

If there wasn't an increment, why wasn't the player with the Rook able to invoke 10.2 or one of its successors before the flag fell? That is indeed the motivation of my question. As Stewart says, just full information. Possibly they were playing without either an increment, or quickplay finish rule....

Re: Laws of Chess - changes

John McKenna WhIte HAD lost he right to play 0-0-0 because the position given us only had the R and K on the board. So it was now - or never. We have glossed over the fact that the position was totally illegal anyway. There was no Black king on the board. It is one of the most common errors, not bei...
