Re: Chess references in Films
Laurence Harvey was the principal guest actor in that old Colombo film - if memory serves me correct.

John Sellen >please clarify your comment Justin< Matt Mckenzie >EJH was referring to the first "modern" Planet Of The Apes film, he made no comment on either of those that you mention.< It is a common error not to cross-reference what you are referring to and can, with the best will in the world, ca...

Simon > Stars David Oyelowo. < David Oyelowo may well be the best known actor in Queen of Katwe. But he plays the part of the arbiter who teaches her chess. The girl is the main character. Jovanka told me she has met the girl who plays for the Ugandan women's team. Great play is made in the film tha...

Re: Syd Kalinsky
I attended Syd's funeral by zoom today. There were 111 participants. They will be holding 'Shiva' for 4 days, presumably from Sunday. That is where the official mourners receive guests who come to pay their respects. In lock-down perhaps this is limited to the immediate family. Sid had 4 children an...

Re: Senior Tournaments in 2021
I am considering holding the English Senior Championships in England at a venue that will become very convenient for me - if I move. The venue is 30000 sq ft and thus would normally be big enough for 150 chess players, perhaps 75 this year. I have just this moment thought of another possibility. I, ...

CRITICAL THINKING I saw this 2020 film on Sky/Virgin channel Greats Friday at 4.25pm. I only noticed what it was about immediately before the programme and thus could not provide advance notice. It is a typical US High School story of pupils becoming strong chess players and going on to win the US S...

Monday 5 April ITV 3 rerun of WYCLIFFE the pilot episode of a detective series, set in Cornwall. Early in the 100 minute episode you see two men playing chess. It went too quickly to see whether the moves made sense or had anything to do with the ensuing plot. Tuesday 6 April TV Ad for San Miguel.2 ...

Re: Laws of Chess - changes
If there wasn't an increment, why wasn't the player with the Rook able to invoke 10.2 or one of its successors before the flag fell? That is indeed the motivation of my question. As Stewart says, just full information. Possibly they were playing without either an increment, or quickplay finish rule....

British arbiters have an advantage over arbiters from elsewhere. FIDE conducts its business in UK English.

John McKenna WhIte HAD lost he right to play 0-0-0 because the position given us only had the R and K on the board. So it was now - or never. We have glossed over the fact that the position was totally illegal anyway. There was no Black king on the board. It is one of the most common errors, not bei...

David Sedgwick is correct. That was the decision by the Rules Commission when the matter was discussed, in a somewhat different context. Geurt Gijssen was Chairman at the time and I secretary. the position was. White Ke1 Rh1. Black Qg3 checking the king. kg8. The moves 1 Ke2 qg4 2 Ke1 qg3+ 3 Kd2 qd6...

Nick >Have you signed up for a cruise?< I do not intend to leave the British Isles before December 2021 at the earliest. I put a £50 deposit on a Southampton round Britain cruise at the end of August 2021, but Princess cancelled it, still holding the same one in October. But it would be too cold by ...
