Re: The Daily Mail & chess?

Geoff's point about price is a good one which I will investigate. Since the advent of Amazon, eBay and the like I've wondered how useful it is to quote the RRP. If the Net Book Agreement was in force (it was abandoned in March 1997) then quoting prices would have greater merit. Nonetheless, I will q...

Re: Basic Chess

There's a review here which you may or may not choose entirely to believe The notation used for the 2021 edition is short-form (non-figurine) English algebraic such as 19. Rad1! Qxf3? 20.Rxe7+! Nxe7? 21.Qxd7+!! Kxd7 22.Bf5++ Ke8 and looks perfectly understandable to me. I doubt if the content of th...

Re: The Daily Mail & chess?

Thanks to Stephen Wright (Vancouver) and Leonard I wrote: We did our research (thanks Stephen Wright of Vancouver and Leonard Barden of The Guardian and The Financial Times) and it turns out The Daily Mail had a chess column from 14/11/1906 until 1908 edited by James Mortimer.  From 08/10/1919 until...

The Daily Mail & chess?

I'm writing a review of The Daily Mails latest chess publication.

I say latest but I suspect it is their very first.

Has The Daily Mail ever had a chess column / feature or regular puzzle?

Maybe we need to go back to the 1920s?

Thanks for your help.

Re: FIDE internal fighting

"Andrew is no longer with us." I know - the bit I quoted describes him as "late". He and I may have exchanged emails at one stage. If it helps (and it probably doesn't) I received the same email today Hello John, Are you free at the moment? I need your help with something. Best Regards, Andrew Paul...

Re: FIDE internal fighting

"The minutes seem to imply some connection between Kirsan and Agon, being that Kirsan financed Agon in some manner and would now like to own it in lieu of debt repayment, or was he owning or financing it all along, despite the denials of the late Andrew Paulson?" I have to report I today received a...

"If you want to know who James and Jake are (and I didn’t) then purchase the Yearbook!"

A bit harsh - why don't you want to know who they are?

I've revised my opinion of what I wanted to know you'll be delighted to learn.

Re: Improve Your Life by Playing a Game

No, rather that this review is the first in a while that says "we don't recommend this" (though maybe I am misremembering) I will confess to being fairly selective in the publishers chosen to review. There are publishers whose bar is, on average, low. There are titles appearing as ebook offerings o...
