Don't tell Gary Kenworthy of this thread whatever you do!
Dare one ask why?
I fear that we will all find out soon enough.
I don't think he has an account here any more, so perhaps not.

Didn't know that Povah's rating had gone that low, though he is in his 70s now.

Surely assassinated is more likely than defeated?
He is in his 70s and could die fairly soon anyway (and yes, there are rumours)

Re: Counties and clubs

No, these are weekend matches.

During the week there is a South Cumbria league (Barrow, Ulverston, Kendal) only.

Re: Counties and clubs

There are also Barrow v Carlisle matches, though the two clubs have agreed to play them at Kendal in recent years.

Re: Counties and clubs

Do we actually have any counties that don't have a league of their own? Happy to be corrected but I think: -Rutland (which falls under Leicester and Rutland but does not appear to have a league or any clubs of it's own) -Herefordshire (there is at least one club in the county but there does not app...

Re: Caro Kann Breyer variation

Like many such openings, it can be dangerous if Black hasn't prepared for it or takes things casually.

Leonid Stein got some nice wins with it as White, back in the day.

Re: Best Game by an English Player (the vote)

I think the general idea is that the English player doesn't lose, though?

Though of course Zukertort probably should not count as an English player if we are being honest.....

Did he play for Oxfordshire?
He was based there for several years, so almost certainly yes.

Re: accepting gambits

The encounter in question between Timman and Smyslov was included in Jon Speelman's book featuring the best games of 1970-80. It featured the pseudo piece sacrifice 11 Ng5!? which had famously been uncorked by Karpov against Korchnoi in the previous year's WC - ISTR an account that when he played it...

Drew a complete blank on R. Mahoney and E. Horton.
I would rather suspect EJ (Justin) Horton, formerly of these parts.
Pretty sure he often called himself Ed Horton in the past, especially when commenting on football matters.

Re: accepting gambits

They generally don't allow it because it is now reckoned a likely draw with best play.
