Re: Media comments on chess

I think the last organised BBC chess programming of any sort was covering the Kasparov v Anand title match in 1995.

That is nearly 30 years ago now!

Re: York Chess Club

I don't suppose York still play the annual "Roses Match" against Lancaster?

Started as an annual thing (originally in September) in 1983 and was still going strong in the noughties.

Re: 2024 FIDE Candidates Toronto April 3-23

It is a genuinely striking coincidence, so not much more needs to be added.

Re: 2024 FIDE Candidates Toronto April 3-23

I cannot have much sympathy for Nakamura (should have been more adventurous in final round) I think this is harsh. play 1.e4 and face a Berlin, so 1.d4 (which Caruana also chose, and Giri said it's accepted that this is what you try in a must win) then a QGA. Is there even an adventurous way to pla...

Re: 2024 FIDE Candidates Toronto April 3-23

Caruana's miss in the last round was remarkable, I hope it doesn't affect him too badly.

A shame that Abasov collapsed in the second half of the event, again he will hopefully take it in his stride.

Apart from the run of losses in the middle ;)

But yes, certainly one to watch when the next Candidates comes along.

Is anyone predicting Gukesh to win outright?
He is leading with a round to go, how can anyone rule him out?

After all, it "only" needs the top two games to end up as draws for that to happen.

Vaishali wins again
Her fourth win in a row!

In the last round Tan meets Muzychuk, the only player who still hasn't won a game. Surely not....?

Re: 2024 FIDE Candidates Toronto April 3-23

Don't think there has been a really exciting last round in the Candidates since 2013.

And there were "just" two in contention then, not four. We certainly won't get all the front runners losing this time anyway :)

Re: Sue Maroroa Jones

My mum had a significant operation last year and was sent home from hospital after a couple of days, *despite* being told beforehand that she would be in for longer. I think a principal reason for that, and lots of other similar instances, is the one that you concluded your post with. And just occas...

I think that post maybe wasn't being 100% serious.

Personally not really keen on a Naka win either.

Re: 2024 FIDE Candidates Toronto April 3-23

I presume this is all about avoiding opening preparation, but I have to say, I thought the French was under a bit of a cloud? Leonard Barden's Guardian column today mentions the game Tan v Rameshbabu from the Women's event. He writes The opening is well worth a look as Tan secured easy equality wit...

Why only 10 games?

Given the holder draw odds is an argument for lengthening the current arrangements, rather than the opposite.

Nepo goes back in the lead, with a win that looked unlikely for much of the game.

So what is a penalty shootout, the equivalent of a blitz game?
