Re: Proposed Correspondence Chess Rule

The first time I read that I thought it was completely insane. I haven't changed my mind.
Presumably because it discourages resignation, as one's chances of improving one's final placing is enhanced by the policy of using ETL to end the game.

Re: Rating Deflation?

Like Nick, I would love to know what these "objectively observable phenomena" might be. I suspect Martin mixes mostly with those over 40. What we do know is that rating trends vary with age.. The Full List graph is the full standard play rating list averaged by each age and smoothed. Opening ratings...

Re: Do the ECf have a new policy to demerit the FM Title

Genuine question, is the NM title still a thing? Yes - see here: https://www.englishchess.org.uk/master-points-system/ . It is the lowest title we record on the rating system. It is quite popular as it allows players to enter some elite online events (I can't comment on whether they get a discount ...

These were those Eccles events: https://eccleschess.com/when-arkell-came-to-eccles/ "Saturday: In the early hours of the morning it was my turn to try and beat Keith. I decided not to notate to give me the edge (my husband did). I lost on time playing my third game as I fell asleep thinking about m...

I can assure you that it was not designed to do this.

Re: FIDE to test "First Over-the-Board Official Rating, Earned Online"

My initial conclusion, though, when looking at the plot would be to simply give children a new rating (capped by age) based on a rolling 15 performance similar to how they would obtain an initial rating. That could be yearly and/or based on a certain deviation. Now whether that is actually practica...

I'll grab it at some point today and send you a PM I'd like to see this too. This phenomenon is not what I am seeing, but there may be views I had not considered. Well, you have access to the data which is even simpler. Well, definitely better at a minimum. If you look at kids whose rating improvem...

In this case it was a security infrastructure issue. If it was just the server going down, there are robust back-up routines.

Re: Monthly Rating Calculations

Keith,
It's not so clear at the very top, but further down. Consider what happens in the next to those in the age group when you qualify for 70+. Many seniors could learn from the exceptions who seem to retain their rating with increasing age.

Re: Monthly Rating Calculations

The top player list works on "FIDE age". It changes on 1st January based on the age one attains in the year.

Enjoy it while you can, another cohort arrives at the end of the year. They tend to push aside incumbents.

Re: Monthly Rating Calculations

LMS failed as well. We haven't got to right to the bottom of things but expect to catch up both LMS and the rating system overnight. The LMS match cards look right now, but the games played on Tuesday evening (31 March) haven't been rated, which presumably affects the April blue original ratings Ma...
