Re: When Will The February Grades Come Out?

There will be 4-digit grades for February based on Initial 4-digit grades converted from the January list (results to the end of December) updated for January results. At present we do not have the capability to do these calculations, indeed we are not quite ready to encourage graders to send in mon...

Re: January Grades are out

There is a problem for some players that we have now identified. I'm not sure how widespread it is and therefore how much work is involved in fixing it, but I will be talking to Matt Carr when he's got back from Gibraltar. The players affected have a few 2018 results included in the latest list - so...

Re: January Grades are out

Yes they are. They are out later than we would like, but some of the delay is about trying out things for monthly grading. Hence the delay is not necessarily an indication of the new system. For the first time the rapid list is longer than the standard play version although the result count is about...

Re: New grading conversions

There are a few points I can comment on. On this issue Ian was first: Each ungraded player will be deemed to have drawn with an 1850 graded opponent as an extra result on initial grading. I'll take Brian's word for it that this works well for junior players new to the grading system, but what about ...

Re: Hastings grading year

Matt Carr, the Grading Administrator, is on site and can advise if approached. While the wording is as quoted by Ian, our recent approach has been to split the grading period at Hastings depending on the date of completion of the event within the congress. Where players have grades, the January list...

Re: Is rating deflation a thing?

The latest work I can find is found here: https://reading.academia.edu/GuyHaworth scroll down to download the paper "Intrinsic Chess Ratings". It is all very complex but in the Results section they state "....we conclude that there has been little or no ‘inflation’ in ratings over time—if anything t...

Re: Is rating deflation a thing?

I’m sure that I will not be the only one interested in the results. I did start some work on this to see if something similar could be included in the monthly grading suite of tests. However it went into the too difficult pile, where it remains. There are three principle hurdles. The main one is dec...

Re: Message to all Graders

We are trying to pass out information when we have it and intend to consult where it seems a good idea. Has the calculation methodology been released? https://www.englishchess.org.uk/monthly-grading-proposal/ This proposal has broadly passed later tests. I hope to publish an update with refinements ...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

I never understood the argument for recalibration. It was Sean Hewitt's doing and he wrote a paper explaining why it was done and I suppose I should go back and read it, but my problem is this: the idea behind the grading system is that if 2 players with grades 25 apart play a match then one of the...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

Purely curiosity - especially with the big changes already done/coming! - but I'd actually be intrigued if anyone has checked if/how they worked out. As far as I can tell they seemingly meant 200 grades to stay stable - increases lower down - but they do seem to have picked up a bit. Anyway :) It d...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

I can only comment on the last two points. 3. I don't think one anecdote makes a rating system flawed. Nevertheless we are looking at whether there should be some cut off. GDPR is one issue. 4. This is not something we envisage. Organisers want the evidence for section limits. Brian Valentine Manage...
