Re: The new Monthly grades are out

The conversion was a tricky decision. We decided that status quo (7.5*grade+700=Elo) was the least unpalatable. I did a short investigation following a post on this forum from Roger Lancaster. It was available on the ECF website till we went live. I don't see why it cannot be added here so I've atta...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

We had to fix that glitch. Matt Carr's heroics in getting Blackpool graded have now been rewarded by inclusion on the website.

Hopefully these regulations are buried so deep that Matthew Carr and Brian Valentine will be unable to find them, or at least not feel like searching for them.
But Michael we've been forewarned because of the request to alter the k-factor for those with short arms.

Re: July 2020 grades

The current database will be turned off and the vast majority of the data will be transferred to the new system. For obvious reasons the new system will not be built to calculate Clarke grades. Hence the need to get the data right before the August update.

Re: Master Points System

Adrian Elwin and I have agreed that we will look at an appropriate set of comparable standards when the new rating system is up and running.

Shall I give you the gender of all the players I know where you currently have nothing?
Paul, If a grader thinks something is wrong with the list, then as you are one, I encourage you to email Matt or myself and we can work on it.

Re: Could everyone lose their grade

I have no idea why particular players lost their rating, but numbers have held up quite well. The number of A-F Category players have fallen from 10,824 to 10,231; from January to July In 2019 the drop was about 80.

Re: July 2020 grades

There are always a few issues with the July list, that's why the August list is given greater weight. Corrections can be made. It is particularly important this year since normally we get a dribble of corrections right through to December(usually things like players with duplicate codes). However we...

Do we have any statistics comparing the results of games played by players X hundred points apart at different positions on the scale?

Re: 4NCL Online

A quick question for Brian V - the histogram of FIDE ratings, given above, is it for English players only? (Since the ordinate axis only goes up to about 10,000 roughly the number of players in the ECF grading pool and no where near the number of all players in the FIDE rating pool.) It's all FIDE ...

Re: 4NCL Online

[Indeed - that is probably what a grading list produces]. Whenever a grading list is produced in graphical form, it invariably comes out looking Normal. The ECF one of Clarke grades peaks at around the 135 to 140 area. Whilst it's plausible for the upper end to be Normal or have a strong resemblanc...

Re: Could everyone lose their grade

The rules for grades will be changed in September to support monthly grading. We are still on track to deliver these on time. Everyone who has had at least one grade (separately for standard and rapid) published since 2017 will have a 4-digit grade for January 2020 when our monthly calculations will...

Re: July 2020 grades

The Chessnuts basic system is robust enough to handle Elo grades quite well. A little modification has been required but it churns out 4 digit grades exactly as specified.

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

However, we do not know how different countries count the deaths (whether all sources, or hospitals only), so comparison with other countries is pointless at present. I'm surprised that my fellow Old Reigatian Keir Starmer doesn't watch the daily press conference, or he would know that. [snip] i'm ...

Re: Has anyone figured out how to make a living?

The FT had an article in Saturday's edition on tennis earnings. The 250th ranked man won $124,000 in 2019 (womens 250th: $80,000). One needs to add on endorsements and deduct competition costs. The gist was how skewed the distribution was. Nadal won most with $16.4m. By eye on their graph about 50 p...
