Re: 44th Blackpool Chess Conference

Not in the same class as the Blackpool Conference, but I played in the Birmingham Rapidplay, Sunday 15th March. Sutton Coldfield's Henrik Stepanyan won the Open.

I well remember many players awkwardly bump elbows at the start of a game only to forgetfully shake hands at the end.

Re: Puzzles

There's at least another word pronounced differently if initially capitalised. I'll give a clue as to the one I'm thinking about: it starts with the first letter of the alphabet. I've thought of a possible answer but don't want to dive in until others have seen the question. If I am correct it's a ...

I think Juga Di Prima has the ideal style for a James Bond theme song. Take a listen and see what you think: https://youtu.be/21QpsK7LRM4

What is "neural net" and "github" Developers of "free" and open source software might use GitHub as the public storehouse of their shareable code. Chess engines used to have humanly intuitive, fixed internal settings (like bonuses for the bishop pair or fewer pawn islands) whose values would have b...

Re: What's wrong with the software?

In 1851 when the Immortal Game was played it can indeed be seen that Kieseritzky played Black. The earliest publication of the game I have seen (and possibly it was the first publication) was in Kling and Horwitz's magazine "The Chess Player" on page 2 of the very first issue. Shortly after it was ...

Re: Magnus Carlsen : 60 Memorable Games

Where to start. Look at the introduction to Soviet Chess, full of personalized insults, such as the Soviets being 'the world's greatest liars' yet it tries to pass itself off as an academic publication, well at least it has the pretentions as such. Chess players should stick to chess theory and onl...

Re: Reshevsky missed a trick

Reshevsky rarely missed a trick, ever. He had the help of such a steward in Great Yarmouth 1935 when he beat BH Wood. (See The Great Reshevsky on the Forward Chess platform.)

It is interesting that Roberts claimed chess to be "work" as if he were a professional, although playing in a lower section.

Re: Constitution for chess club

A few thoughts... Beware unrealistic quora. Imagine if a few people leave the club for whatever reason. There are real life cases of organisations unable (constitutionally) to call a meeting or replace officials, etc. Don't state an address unnecessarily. Venues are lost quicker than constitutions c...

My top three every year. 1. Slade — Merry Xmas Everybody [1973]. Noddy Holder called this perennial hit his equivalent of a pension plan. 2. The Waitresses — Christmas Wrapping [1981]. New wave, story-telling song with a happy ending. In real life the lead singer died of lung cancer aged 40. 3. Chuc...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021

It looks now as if all listed events now need the full monty of Zoom, no electronics in the room, etc. I think previously there seemed to be a small list, including the Major Open, that didn’t. ...correction. Everything but the qualifiers. I received an email this morning (5 Dec) from Nigel Towers:...
