Re: 45th Guernsey International Chess Festival

I had forgotten, but on looking backing back at the thread on last year's event, I found the following:

To the best of my recollection, The Curse of Sedgwick has never yet struck at Guernsey.

Today might be the time, of course.
The Curse never did strike last year, but ...

It hasn't always been customary: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-b ... e-34794497
It was always a bit of a stretch to describe that incident as an example of the Curse.

Re: 45th Guernsey International Chess Festival

The Curse of Sedgwick has just struck, for the first time in quite a while.

As is customary with the Curse, it was a false alarm.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

At the end of a long tournament a tired player made a bad blunder.

Nothing sinister and no story, in my opinion.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

So are we sure what the respective players' tiebreaks are? The TB1 column on the standings after 10 rounds doesn't appear to have updated after the round 11 draw was made, which I thought that it would. I make the order Wang Hao, Caruana, Alekseenko, Aronian, Carlsen, Nakamura, Vitiugov, Howell . S...

I thought there was a need to be over 50% or did I just make that up?
There is a minimum requirement, but it is 35%.
Thanks. Maybe I was remembering 50% from somewhere else in the Handbook and Regulations.
Possibly that 50% is a minimum requirement for CM and WCM titles at an Olympiad.

Live games should appear at http://www.guernseychessclub.org.gg/fes ... stival.htm

But sometimes the first round transmission doesn't work as well as hoped.
Things seem to be okay this year. (The Hebden games is a late start.)

Re: 45th Guernsey International Chess Festival

Is there a reason why the pairings do not look quite normal? Agreed; the colours for the higher rated player seem wrong on boards 15 and 18: David Sedgwick one of the beneficiaries! There were some adjustments owing to one or two players arriving late. There is no prohibition on that. It is not a t...

Re: Council Papers are out

I think it should also be in the public domain that one of the bronze membership representatives did not attend and instructed no proxy, so a good number of the rank and file were disenfranchised. This should not be taken as a criticism of the representative concerned as I strongly suspect extenuat...

Re: Council Papers are out

Did no-one raise a couple of apparent recent anomalies? These being the curious case of the late and reversing finishing order in the Grand Prix and the strangeness of the timing and language surrounding the appointment of the Development Officer? Obviously those who were at the meeting can speak f...

Chess.com Isle of Man International Major and Minor Tournaments

I have taken the liberty of assuming that the Major and Minor Tournaments in the Isle of Man might be worthy of a separate thread.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

I hope it's not like one tournament I played in a long time ago where there were two playing rooms and players on lower boards weren't allowed in the other room where the higher boards were. My understanding (which may be incorrect) is that players in play are allowed in both rooms, but players who...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

There is a Major and Minor as well with a few forumites in it so we should be well catered for regarding on the spot reports. I can't promise to come on here very often, but here goes ... Keith fought hard - I hope he loitered in the hall long enough to watch the end of Hess - Ponomariov. He should...
