Re: Improve Your Life by Playing a Game
I was intrigued by, "Chapter 6, Theories and Studies on Benefits of Chess’, moves into rather different territory. We learn about chess and education, and about chess and health problems, though I for one would raise a very strong objection to describing ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder as health ...

Re: Takeback requests in online games
Qd6+ is not a losing blunder and still keeps the win on the board, but it misses mate in one. ---- As Black I might resign before answering The position looks bust, drop it and start again. (After Qd6+ what did Black play. Kd8! ) Black, Richard James, played ... Kf7, and is still in the game. I pla...

Re: Takeback requests in online games
Black blunders with ... Nd7. White plays Qd6+, then asks for a takeback on the grounds that it was a mouseslip and he was in the act of playing Qxd7 Mate. Consider your reaction to this request. My reaction would be that Qd6+ is a very plausible move and not at all the kind of thing we are thinking...

IOM International are hoping to hold a Major & Minor alongside the Grand Swiss but waiting on developments. Late Oct / Early Nov A decision will be taken during the summer as to whether the Grand Swiss can proceed as scheduled. If it does not, then it is almost certain that the Major and Minor Tour...

Re: Arbiting question on 50 move rule
You can get little hand-held devices (where you press a button and the total increases), which is a bit easier than using a scoresheet. I think David Sedgwick would know the source of these. Alex Holowczak told me about them. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=finger+counter+digital&crid=2YM8O0ENIK81V&sp...

Re: Touch move and castling
So if I play Bc1 to f4, then to g5 and then press the clock, this is acceptable if the arbiter agrees with my explanation that I accidentally let go of the piece on f4, rather than intentionally playing Bf4? Not at all. We are talking about clearly accidental loss of contact, as in the two cases de...

Re: Touch move and castling
So by analogy retraction of all mouseslips that are clearly mouseslips should be permitted? No. In Online play you don't have the physical evidence. You may, though, with cameras. I would suggest that that is doubtful. I make my share of mouseslips and I make plenty of one move blunders which are n...

Paul McKeown's example is something of a special case.

Re: Events in 2021
I am doing four rapidplay events in July and August, but I would like to have 10 all play sections of 6. However FIDE would charge £70 per section to rate them! So I think I will just stick to ECF rating these... We are happy to confirm that the FIDE Council has indeed decided "to waive rating fees...

Re: Touch move and castling
I agree completely with Paul McKeown. You apply the Preface and treat "clearly accidental loss of contact" in the same way as "clearly accidental contact". That the player who dropped his King was in the process of castling is something of a red herring, except to the extent that it provides evidenc...

Re: Events in 2021
There was a rapidplay in Hull listed for yesterday, but I rather think that's just not been removed. Correct. Deletion was requested some time ago, but the FIDE Elista Office are always slow to act on such requests for some reason. Nothing notified to FIDE yet for the 4NCL, Hastings and others. We ...

There is not a word about Chile predominantly using the Chinese vaccine; whose efficacy is much debated and generally speaking has been overstated Nor the fact that while "cases" have bounced, deaths haven't. They may yet, as deaths lag infections by four to five weeks. I do of course hope and pray...
