Re: Tier 4 visa regulations

Sad, but I suppose it makes sense. It makes no sense to me unless I am missing something :(, why for example is it desirable to stop a talented sports person from doing unpaid coaching at a local junior club. It would make much more sense to me if there was a de-minimis level of earnings/income.

Re: World Teams 2019

It's worth noting David Howell is now rated 1 in England based on the live ratings and Luke McShane is rapidly rising with a live rating of 2684.

Did Adams see the line would be a good question.

But if I were a chess journalist I'd be interested in what Adams was thinking at the time etc.

Re: World Teams 2019

Whatever the engines say - I don't think it is that straightforward in the Adams game - I think after Rb8, Re2 it would still require black to play very accurately. Of course black is better but it would be easy to let the advantage slip, particularly as the time control approached. Overall it is a ...

Re: Arbitration question

I have never been enamoured with that rule. Of course we have not been told whether White first picked up the opponent's g pawn or his own f pawn. in my opinion, if the latter, the intention was clear. If it was first the g pawn, clearly that mut be captured with the queen. e.g. White Bc3 Kc2 Rf1. ...

Re: Chess Put Forward To Join Paris 2024 Olympic Games

12 seconds for the 100m is not "moderate" for an adult male athlete. It is pathetic. When I was 16 I was Durham County schools champion in the triple jump and wondered if my 100m time of 11.0 seconds would also get me on the Durham team for 100m. Forget it. The two boys on the Durham team both had ...

Most of my games now are subject to instant grading :), with the added advantage of no travel.

Re: January Grades are out

I now seem to be ungraded although I played 13 games last season and did have a 178 grade, at this point publishing the grading list twice a year doesn't seem to be great step forward :(

Re: London Junior oddity

If you look at the results in round 6 she drew with Tarini Jayawarna, who has a similar FIDE rating which would suggest that it was not unreasonable for her to be in that section based on FIDE rating given that she had not qualified for the major. There was possibly an issue with seeding but these t...

Re: 2019 new ECF junior selection policy

I only had a quick read through, but one thing that did strike me was that it seems somewhat incomplete for the World Junior unless I am missing something (so for example qualification by rating/title).

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

I think the main point is that overall the event does raise the profile of chess and does bring in welcome money for the top British players as well as the Chess in Schools and Communities initiative. It also provides young players with role models and the realisation that if they become the best th...
