David Howell quote - "Today was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my career. Not only did the arbiter not know the laws of chess, but he patted me on my bum while trying to usher me out of the playing hall. Surely this is harassment?" https://twitter.com/DavidHowellGM/status/1723414937119203...

Re: ECF Membership Reform
How about two types of membership - club player membership collected by the clubs as part of their membership fees and sent to the ECF by the clubs and compete membership paid by individuals allowing them to enter tournaments. Junior/online categories also.

Re: Simpson's in the Strand
Among the auction items I didn't see the chessboard, or whatever, signed controversially by an English GM in company with greats from the past. The link given by Ian seems different to this list e.g. lot 54 https://img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/5e1d9d8a-4e8c-4667-aad7-6217ef41dae1/downloads/Simpsons%20i...

Her great great grandparents George Illingworth and Nanny (Ann) Shefileld were the direct ancestors of Prunella (apologies if I have that wrong I only spent a few minutes having a quick look).

Re: Blood Glucose monitoring device and OTB chess
I have come across this once before in a league match although I wasn't playing on that board. From memory the player said it was a medical alarm on their phone and they normally turned it off before a game and had forgotten to do so. There then followed an argument with the player whose alarm had g...

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
edit : On reflection, a clear statement that online cheating on commercial sites would not have OTB repercussions would also be an improvement on where we are now. Above all, players need clarity. Not sure I agree with this, I believe above all players need fairness and a cheat free enviroment to p...

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
I suspect the bottom line is that Magnus "could easily have voiced his concerns" and as a result could easily have ended up in court - particularly if he was incorrect or could not prove any allegations made against one or more individuals. Quite likely, but if that's so he needed to have a much be...

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2
Well it's not about right or wrong but more so interpretation. The bottom line is Magnus could easily have voiced his concerns and hasn't. That is the cause of all the problems and has resulted in it turning into a scandal. He was outplayed and his behaviour was not very sporting. The whole thing h...

Re: Aditya Verma
The way I look at it, why would you ever joke about a bomb on a plane; he has been found to be a total idiot and deserves any consequences for his stupidity I think he deserves reasonable consequences rather than "any" consequences. The question is what are reasonable consequences and without full ...
