Re: Government response to petition 'Mindsports'

Politicians prevaricating and sitting on the fence. Who would have believed it?

Does anyone know if the petition will be redirected to the home country sports councils?

Top caterers for those hungry at Huddersfield

Just a note for anyone thinking of playing in the Huddersfield Congress on March 28-30 - and I hope there are plenty of you - our chief organiser Nigel Hepworth has managed to procure the services of the caterers who provide refreshments at the Doncaster Congress. As anyone who has attended Doncaste...

Manchester Congress - is there going to be one?

Does anyone know if there is to be a Manchester Congress this year, and if so when and where it will be?

I have sent a message to the email address that was on last year's entry form with this query, but have not received a reply.

Thanks.

Re: Congresses - playing for fun or profit?

Deal, Charles. We plan to hold it on the last weekend in March year-on-year so I'd say it's fairly safe to mark it in your diary now. By the way, re the free chess sets for schools, have you had any contact from the Yorkshire Post (I'm deputy sports editor on the paper). Obviously this is a news sto...

Re: Congresses - playing for fun or profit?

Thanks for that, Charles. And good luck with the event you're going to instead. Maybe my enthusiasm will wane in future years, but having been away from the board for so long - because of professional and family commitments - I want to play as much as possible before I am called to that big chess bo...

Re: Congresses - playing for fun or profit?

Thanks, Charles. We were planning that after canvassing the views of an elder statesman who was playing at the Doncaster Congress and suggested the same thing. We have a month before our congress and hopefully that will give us the time to prepare a questionnaire and have it printed up. If there are...

Re: Congresses - playing for fun or profit?

I guess there must be a proportion - how big, I wouldn't want to guess - of congress entrants who are after the prize money, but at best the prize winners are likely to offset the cost of travel, entry, meals etc plus have a bit left over for the latest must-have chess book. My Mastermind specialist...

Congresses - playing for fun or profit?

As Huddersfield's Congress approaches, myself and another club member were kicking around ideas about ways of improving what we already feel is a fine, but obviously not perfect event, and pondered on the possibility of possibly running two a year. On the prospect of implementing the latter idea, I...

Huddersfield Rapidplay June 24

The final entry was 93 despite a few no-shows from people who had entered before the day. Overall it was another very successful event and Huddersfield is becoming established on the chess calendar for both its tournaments.
