Re: Rook Odds Rules.

I’m trying to make a little puzzle ...

White is a playing at odds of queen’s rook. The following position is reached:

White - king on e1, pawn on a3.
Black - king on c3, pawn on b4.

Black plays 1...b4-b3. Is this a) a winning move, b) a terrible blunder allowing white to draw, or c) ... ?

Re: The DeMontford Bell Kings Place Chess Festival

Thanks, I hadn't found that ( obviously! ). Do we know how Peter Sowray came to lose to Jonathan Rowson in the last round when they appeared to be repeating moves? Are the games from yesterday still available online? If so, I'm happy to try to fix the score of my game vs. Jonathan. Fantastic event ...

Re: Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in London

David,

We'll have to agree to disagree here. I suspect that your views are shared by the vast majority of players, but I've made my point and I'll leave this thread for now.

Best,

Peter

Re: Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in London

David, Thanks for your considered views. I didn't specifically mention Yudina by name in my original post, partly because I have referred to her case (as have others) in previous posts on this forum, and partly because the human rights charge sheet against Ilyumzhinov extends beyond her murder. Of c...

Re: Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in London

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has many faults. It's not immediately obvious to me why you consider his "human rights record" to be one of them. Could you elaborate, please? David, There are many good sources. You could start by googling Larisa Yudina, or visit the Kingpin site and look at their material. Or r...

The ECF's own record of the meeting shows that they failed to challenge Ilyumzhinov's human rights record. Or if they did, they chose not to publish this.

In either case, that's unacceptable.

In the light of Ilyumzhinov's human rights record, I find the ECF's behaviour unacceptable.

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

I am concerned about players going to the loo with a mobile phone in their pocket. I’ve just done an experiment using the exact position in the case I referred to previously. It took me about 6 minutes to turn my phone on, enter the position into an analysis engine, find the engine’s recommendation,...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

For reasons I explained up-thread, introducing the ACP rule in the 4NCL and other weekend / hotel-based events would have no impact on many (most?) players. That's incorrect. Assuming you didn't want to leave valuables in your car, or you didn't have a car, what are you going to do with your luggag...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

So, in the case I cited above, what actions should the Arbiters and Player B have taken? Apart from noting the behaviour as possibly suspicious, very little. But you don't know it was mobile phone cheating, it could have been consult another player cheating. Equally the player was stronger than pre...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

OK - perhaps you could draft something appropriate. In their way the existing (pre July 2014) Laws are completely adequate in 12.2 and 12.3(a) 12.2 Players are not allowed to leave the ‘playing venue’ without permission from the arbiter. The playing venue is defined as the playing area, rest rooms,...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

It's Player A's move and he is away from the board for at least ten minutes and he is out of sight. That surely is the problem. Rather than devise nonsense rules defaulting players for putting their jackets on, address the problem at source. Other than necessity, perhaps once a game, it isn't accep...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

I can't see myself leaving my mobile in my car at the 4NCL once I have checked out (or before checking in, given I have at least twice had to leave luggage at reception as my room wasn't ready before the Saturday game started) I particularly can't see me leaving it in someone else's car if I wasn't...
