Re: Complaint to ECF Board about CEO Mike Truran re. Development Officer appointment

But you could use historic money elsewhere to develop chess. What if you gave each and every weekend Congress a grant of a thousand pounds or more? They could use it to hire better premises, slash entry fees, increase prize money or just increase the arbiter's meal allowances. If you ever decide to...

Re: Chess.Com getting sued.

It does make your forum signature kind of ironic though, he he. Dont worry too much about it, I get banned for "cheating" all the time in 1-3 min blitz! Most sites just ban as soon as anyone make a report of any kind against a player, I just make new usernames and am right back into playing chess.

Re: 4NCL Women's League

I wouldnt say it was not that strong - most of the players involved are decent standard, they grades are just hamstrung by the crippled fide rating system. 10 years ago pretty much everybody involved would have had 2000+ ratings.

Re: The Death of League Chess?

I do foresee a death of league chess as well, but more likely based on clubs bring priced out of their venues and gradually running out of people willing to do the large amount of unpaid admin work it takes to run them. Still, it is 4 years since this post was made and the league deaths are not happ...

Re: When have you ever been told that you can't go to a AGM

What amazes me most about this situation is that there are still leagues where the AGM is so oversubscribed that they can afford to bar people from attending! All the experiences I have had in various other leagues it seems like more of a struggle just to get new people along who might lend a hand t...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

"Many need to get back to their day job." As long as they give adequate notice, unless there's a genuine emergency. At the Combined Services chess events over the years, I have had players defaulting because they were summoned back to their units at 3 am, and others apologetically missing the first...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

Weaker players than Adams find it pretty much impossible to meet his 1. e4. One is reminded of Karpov in the early 80s, when everyone was weaker than him, and Miles trying 1...a6? because nothing else worked. I love seeing his e4 games - especially when beating down irritants like caro kahn or fren...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

Macshane and short are probably not far behind those 4 either - its a pretty solid era for english chess right now, if we just had one world class GM then maybe we could start winning some team chess events.

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

In Lane - Brewer, why did Gary Lane offer a draw? Looks overwhelmingly good for White to my eyes after the simple to find 35 Ng6+ Kf8 36 Ne5. Mark you, it looked awful for White a few moves earlier, so maybe he was so relieved to have escaped that he offered a draw without taking a fresh look at th...

Re: Resigning in a Winning Position

I remember years ago in my old league seeing a player set up a smothered mate with queen and knight (you know the sort like Nf7+ Kg8, Nh6+, Kh8, Qg8+, Rxg8 Nf7mate ... if you dont know it then it is worth learning, but I digress) . Anyway. Instead of playing the correct sequence of knight checks the...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

Well no, since they have the title they only need three, but It is hardly unrealistic for a 2400-2500 strength player to win a tournament is it so I'm going to say that they do frequently perform high enough to get more norms. Surprised Richard only has one though, I guess all those years of letting...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

I hope that does not nip any GM norm in the bud already? (very much a downside to a nine round event, if so) I'm pretty sure Richard has got a ton of GM norms already ( he's a decent strength IM who tends to score especially well in the British) but getting the rating high enough is the impossible ...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

I think Keith will be pretty pleased with the result, given what could have happened - and everybody running their engines in a nice comfortable lounge were so quick to write him off, but he doesnt have that GM title for nothing !
