The Chess Chase

I just had another one of my GOOD ideas. You know the quiz show 'the chase' ? Well what about this - a chess version of the chase where 4 players compete against a grand master but instead of general knowledge questions (or certainly not "chess" knowledge, where question setters tend to ask ridiculo...

Re: Chess Puzzle Books

The mammoth book of chess and polgars training manual has some good 'proper' puzzles. I enjoy the occasional mad mate in two composition where it is always designed to be the one move nobody would ever even consider, they can serve as a bit of a pre game workout to get yourself thinking in the right...

Re: Some thoughts on anti-cheating systems

Roger makes a good point that players using any modern theory ARE using engine moves for a good portion of the early game - you can usually tell these guys, as they often trash you in the opening, get a good position but fortunately have put no effort into their studies beyond parrot fashion memoris...

Was that against a legit player? If so then fair play to him, fantastic tactic.

Re: What do you think - is this game for real?

Once I saw Nf8 it was case closed for me - even most masters wouldnt play a move like that in the endgame with very little time on the clock. Opening was a bit ropey though, it felt like he didnt turn the engine on until the midgame (or you were using a bunch of engine built theory yourself that was...

Re: Could everyone lose their grade

They only get a published grade when one of them plays a game against someone who already has a grade. If no-one already has a grade that will never happen. It actually makes me wonder how the grading system was even established if it is not possible to grade a whole pool of unrated players - I bel...

Re: 21st Century Chess, in 21st Century Facilities!

I guess there is always a chance a chess player wins the euro lottery and just cant think of anything better to do with their hundreds of millions then building some sort of shrine to chess, but until that happens I think the old chess and bridge clubs are as close as we will ever get in the UK - th...

Re: Has anyone figured out how to make a living?

Even poker isnt what it once was when anyone with a level head could make great money out of all the drunks - AI is good enough to defeat the best humans in the world at that as well now.

Re: Has anyone figured out how to make a living?

Top 100 Coach Teams Tournament All interesting but where does (@) come from to pay for expenses? Top 100 guys get money thrown at them from all angles just to turn up, they dont really have much trouble. Coaching can net you an ok "workman" rate (probably higher for masters of renown) but it is a c...

British Blitz Championships

Just thought that since this event (on chess.com) doesnt seem to have been mentioned anywhere on the forums it would be worth giving it a thread - massive turnout for both rounds, with more masters entering then ever before.

Re: 4NCL Online

I'm fairly certain lichess don't ban anyone for window switching anymore - I've been playing with them for a few years and switch windows constantly during games (usually to change song on YouTube). I would have thought they most commonly ban hackers who have modded the site so that the inbuilt stoc...

Re: Online Congress with Prizes? Arbiting Etc

as long as the prize money is not automatically awarded, and the software on these sites allows you to readjust the results once the cheats have been weeded out then it sounds like a plausible idea to run cash tournaments - you will 100% get people cheating in some way or other, be it sandbagging, e...

Re: 4NCL Online

Just to check that there isn't a silent majority here, may I ask whether there is anyone on this forum who has total confidence in the anti-cheating mechanisms of Chess.com and Lichess? Lichess i have no confidence whatsoever - I play their mini blitz tournaments a lot and you frequently see player...

Re: Has anyone figured out how to make a living?

Chess streaming is pretty big business these days and some of the biggest stars on YouTube are not even GM's - if you have a bit of technical knowledge and some personality it's possible to try that route, though the market is crowded.

Re: Can online chess ever beat the face-to-face over the board experience?

Actually the other big difference is the amount of abuse you get online - I doubt many players would dare talk that way to anyone face but they get very brave when they think themselves anonymous
