Re: Cheating in chess

So he was presumably in collusion with the dealer to know what the river card was going to be, I thought you were going to tell a story about these new poker AI programmes that now exist and are apparently really good at making accurate statistical calls as well as even bluffing so would presumably ...

Re: Membership Renewal

I cant imagine the uptake is going to be huge, outside of those that are feeling altruistic and want to help support the ECF it feels like a massive waste of money paying full price for a membership that is going to last half a season at the very best. On the bright side, if the big national team to...

Re: On-line and OTB chess, main differences?

The other issue with online chess is it gives players anonymity to make extremely unpleasant comments or just be general twats in celebrating their cheated and swindled victories - the sort of thing that would likely get you punched in the face in real life, but online there is rarely even any actio...

Re: The new Monthly grades are out

It is quite nice to see them looking like fide ratings from the pre deflation era... hopefully it will take a good while before these ones start to nosedive as those good ecf players with massively underrated fides will finally have a number that accurately reflects their playing strength.

Re: Pogchamps 2 final 9pm Sunday 06 Sep

Its nice to see elites stepping out of their comfort zone like this too - they would be the equivalent of grand masters in their own specialist games but to reduce themselves back down to a very low level in a chess and risk embarrassment takes some guts. And adding to the chess player pool is never...

Re: What Should the Arbiter Do?

I'm pretty sure this is not that unlikely a scenario, I've been to multiple school competitions where I have seen claims that somebody has touched the piece and the opponent claims otherwise so I'm guessing there must be a pretty standard response when both players are claiming to be right.

Re: Violence on the chessboard

Sounds like you might have just made John a rich man... I'm assuming chess team mates would qualify for inheritance in place of blood relatives?

Violence on the chessboard

I was reading something amusing about how korchnoi used to like to give his opponents a good kick under the table and it got me thinking that, other then a few angry post match words I have never seen any players come to blows over a game of chess (not even in primary school contests!). Made me wond...

Re: On Line Auction today (3rd September)

Where did you find out about these online auctions? I often watch bargain hunt and wish to myself I could be picking up 17th century oak tables for a tenner (or whatever ridiculously undervalued prices furniture seems to go for in mid week auctions these days)

Re: Any further changes expected.

With technology I suspect many more changes in procedure are coming. Servers implementing the "draw after 75 moves" rule would be a good start. This recent game was actually drawn after move 203 according to FIDE rules. [Event "48th Annual World Open"] [Site "ICC INT"] [Date "2020.08.09"] [Round "7...

Re: Rooks and castles

To be explicit about the solution for those who have never done crosswords - Church = CH followed by EN = 'heart of K(en)t' which has 'SSMA' ('Mass' arranged, i.e. anagrammatised) inside it, for E(SSMA)N with the definition 'Castle for one' apologies to those for whom this is redundant Thanks for t...

Re: Membership Renewal

Quite generous discounts from chess and bridge, I wonder what is in it for them to be supporting the ECF this way?

Wow, what a result, I'd have thought they would have been lucky to break the £100 mark.

Re: Any further changes expected.

Actually I did think of another possible rule change for the future - those Google glasses that you can get might have to be regulated if it is possible for a player to view a chess site or app while wearing them
