Re: Division Three South 2019-20

It felt like something went horrendously wrong for white- usually in those lines they just play the standard c3, d4 stuff and then pretend like they were such a brilliant tactician by stifling the play enough that black gets frustrated and blunders.

Re: Dvoretsky books

Im pretty sure dvorestkys contributions to the game will be remembered far more in the future then those of a mediocre Grandmaster that most people living right now haven't heard of. Just a shame he has such a crazy unpronounceable surname - there are so much easier Russian names he could have chosen

Re: Knight Pair

I'd say the main reason the Knight pair tends to get less respect is simply because the odds of reaching a static closed endgame position are relatively lower then ones where a few pawns have been swapped off and the bishops are more influential. Oh, and the fact that they cannot force mate against ...

Re: ChessCube shut it's doors

I liked chesscube but it had some sort of fatal exploit in the site code where people could forcibly disconnect you from a game, and a lot of cheats figured this out and ruined it. Was fun to be able to play and win prizes though- I had about $500 worth of their site currency at one point

Re: The French System

There was talk earlier of banning the French defence, but I have to disagree with that - ban any opening featuring early c3 for white and c6 for black first and foremost. The French is not so bad really, if you don't want to deal with black reciting forced theory in his pet system then just play the...

Re: Cheating in chess

The third parties who may have been harmed include: the arbiter, the organiser; the sponsor; the move inputter; the buletin compiler' and anybody who comes on the so-called game in the future. Speaking as a move inputter, if at the next 4NCL weekend everyone wants to agree a draw in 8 moves, they'd...

Re: Cheating in chess

To be fair, chess is still one of the more honourable games when played over the board (online obviously a different story, some sites have rampant amounts of cheating) compared to some console and pc games where you encounter hackers and exploiters on a daily basis and the developers don't really c...

Re: New grading conversions

You will probably find that you are more naturally motivated to work on your game when trying to reach a target then just learning theory for the sake of it. Not sure what sort of targets might be realistic with the new system - if it turns out to be as broken as fide ratings then I'm sure everyone ...

Re: New grading conversions

So what do we think the tournament bands will be with the new ratings? Something like open, U2000, u1600 ?

I like the idea of being converted to 2200+ but I feel like this is not really consistent with my (or in fact anyone elses) fide - wouldn't ECF x7.5 +500 be more close to how things really are.

He must have really liked people on the ECF forums - we got off quite lightly compared to the echo.

New grading conversions

If we must suffer a change in English grading numbers, I was wondering if there is some sort of formula already devised that will convert current ECF ratings into new 4 digit ones. Also, do we know the formula being used for the new system, so players have an idea what sort of changes they might exp...
