Getting a CM Title

What with the lockdown pushing us to mainly play chess online, I figured it might be worth paying the fide blood money to get this title as it seems to command some level of respect (and apparently free membership) on the bigger chess sites. I am sure we have many CM (or better) players around the f...

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix

I would probably err on the side of No when it comes to suitability for younger children - The sex and swearing might be "mild" by modern standards and possibly more liberal parents might think it is within acceptable boundaries but the drug and alcohol addiction angle is a pretty major part of the ...

Re: Cheating in chess

Genuine 1300s have no place beating genuine 2100s - either they are using assistance or they are a 2000+ level player who has deliberately engineered their rating low in order to win more grade limited prizes so by hook or by crook they still end up guilty. I play tournaments on chess.com which are ...

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix

It's a really great game by both sides, and the embellishments they added improve things even further - I'm sure ivanchuck would have been proud that his have was chosen.

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix

It's possible Netflix might sell it on dvd but it's not like the old days where you would have a set route of cinema - sky - video shop - TV. Netflix has such a huge wealth of content anyway you'll find the price of admission easily worth the money, and if you look for discount codes you'll more the...

Re: Cheating in chess

No other devices or people in the room is not that easy to achieve in a household setting - it would mean online chess becomes more of an elite thing where only those who are single or rich enough to have an entire room of their house dedicated to tournament chess could play. Still, if it stops the ...

Re: Times cryptic chess clue

They do seem to require you to be very tuned into the way of thinking of whoever wrote the clues, especially in this case where half the clue can simply be ignored. The cryptic conventions do take a bit of getting used to. However, every word should count for something in a good clue, so none shoul...

I don't think anyone will ever manage to produce cryptic clues as good as Karl pilkingtons rockbusters though...

I'm surprised at you resigning that one Geoff - a swindler like you should think nothing of being a mere exchange down with a bad king position.

Re: Times cryptic chess clue

That is insane, it seems like unless you already knew the answer (or had a good idea of what you were looking for) you could go miles wrong trying to solve that one. It reminds me of the old riddler clues from the 1960s batman series.

Re: Media comments on chess

Wednesday 4 November on ITV4 in Champion of Comments comparing snooker or tennis with chess are often more appropriate. These sports have more in common with ours. It is interesting how the two games have entirely opposite meanings of the word 'tactical'. In chess if you were to talk about game bei...

Online British championship

So, we are to have our first high profile uk tournament online at Christmas.
How do people feel it will all work out, and are there many forum users tempted to give it a go?
