Re: Missing Game Score: Yates - Mansfield, Cheltenham, 1928
I'm guessing it went something like Ka6 Bb6, the table was flipped over in a fit of rage and sir George demanded satisfaction in the form of pistols at dawn?

Re: Times Winning Move
It is a good example of poor problems, which unfortunately litter the internet these days. The Ne2 line is far tougher to find a winning combination from and yet is discounted as though the writer said "oh well the engine says it wins too so no need to show it" . Bottom line - puzzles need one clear...

Re: Unwritten rules on epitaphs!?
I actually do feel the same about random foreign masters no one has ever heard of, but then again I probably shouldnt complain too much as I have not heard of about 80% of the uk players either (it seems like a lot of uk players are very long lived and die many decades after they played their last c...

Re: Fat Fritz 2
The nice thing in this case is that it is a victimless crime, as all parties involved are responsible for causing irreparable damage to the game I am happy to see all of them lose out. You do have to wonder what sort of people are playing actual money for this "fat Fritz" if it is based on stolen co...

Re: UK Citizenship Test
I am quite familiar with these tests as my wife had to do them and agree that the knowledge the home office considers to be 'common' is generally pretty atrocious. Those questions posted here are actually some of the better ones - I have seen rubbish about obscure Scottish clans, Irish landmarks in ...

Re: The next world champion?
It kind of needs to be someone who hasn't grown up playing tournaments and coming second to Magnus their entire career, as most of his age group fear him and tend to play worse in matches as a consequence. I would guess Alireza Firouzja will become world champion one day - he's 13 years younger then...

Re: Fritz, Chessbase and the rest
In terms of engines there is really little need to think about - just about all the popular ones are astronomically strong in comparison to human players so unless you are planning to enter correspondence tournaments you can just pick anything you like and know it will give you perfect evaluation. I...

Re: Cheating in chess
I have opened up many new accounts, gone from 1200-2200 in a day and never ever had any issues with being banned or accused so there is obviously more to it then the sites simply deciding a handful of won games are sufficient to convict. Flagging users up that fast would almost indicate to me that t...

Re: Demis Hassabis
They are quite different games for white, even though they both feature a side giving up the bishop pair for a positional advantage. With the exchange ruy white has a very simple plan to attempt to swap everything off and win the endgame whereas with that French line black has more chances then just...

Re: Cheating in chess
I just feel like this "well we might make a mistake so best to just do nothing" attitude only emboldens the cheaters if they know their crimes can remain anonymous.

Getting a CM Title
What with the lockdown pushing us to mainly play chess online, I figured it might be worth paying the fide blood money to get this title as it seems to command some level of respect (and apparently free membership) on the bigger chess sites. I am sure we have many CM (or better) players around the f...

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix
I would probably err on the side of No when it comes to suitability for younger children - The sex and swearing might be "mild" by modern standards and possibly more liberal parents might think it is within acceptable boundaries but the drug and alcohol addiction angle is a pretty major part of the ...

Re: Cheating in chess
Genuine 1300s have no place beating genuine 2100s - either they are using assistance or they are a 2000+ level player who has deliberately engineered their rating low in order to win more grade limited prizes so by hook or by crook they still end up guilty. I play tournaments on chess.com which are ...
