Re: 4NCL 2026-27 General Thread
I should have added as context that the bedroom commission income was worth around £150 per team, so in that respect entry fees had to take account of its loss.

Re: 4NCL 2026-27 General Thread
That was back in the heady pre-Covid days when we used to receive very significant bedroom commission income from the hotels we used

It’s not the final team list for Division 4. That will follow soon once a couple of admin points have been sorted out.

Re: 4NCL 2026-27 General Thread
That’s a fair summary. We’ve had this in some previous seasons, but not to this extent. It’s not easy on the playing space planning side. When we negotiate with hotels about how much free playing space they’ll give us in return for good bedroom take-up we have to assume (so as not to overpromise on ...

Re: Raymond Keene's latest credentials
FWIW here's the accountancy firm that carried out the 'independent examiner's report': https://asmita-associates.com/about/ With a gross income of £2.1m they also seem to be in contravention of Charity Commission requirements: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/charity-reporting-and-accounti...

Re: 4NCL 2025-26 Division Two
I had hoped not to post again, but I feel it's important to set out some of the key points from the 4NCL's point of view: • The 4NCL has since its inception has through its positive action in favour of female inclusion been at the forefront of UK chess in promoting female inclusion. • Our policy req...

Re: 4NCL 2025-26 Division Two
My ‘male colleagues’ - no doubt including our Board Chair Claire Summerscale (captain of majority-female team Pride & Prejudice, who won the league in 2010/2011), whom we specifically consulted on Lorin’s proposal, and who was clear that she supported the current rule rather than Lorin’s proposal. A...

Re: 4NCL 2025-26 Division Two
I'm going to post on this subject just once (other than to correct any future inaccuracies that may arise). This is what I sent to the BBC and the national newspapers when they offered the 4NCL the right of reply after Lorin contacted them: • The 4NCL allows neither all-male nor all-female teams in ...

Re: Election of Direct Members' Representatives
The reason for not disclosing the number of votes per candidate was given in the Chair of Council's email: Standing for election does take some nerve, and few people are ready to put themselves forward, so to minimise any embarrassment it has been decided not to publish the number of votes given to ...

Re: Election of Direct Members' Representatives
I’m happy to confirm that I can’t recall ever having sat in front of our fireplace stroking our cat (BTW long since deceased) in the middle of a violent storm plotting how to avoid disclosing election results. Anyway, in this case I imagine that when you loosely refer to ‘the ECF’ you mean the Chair...

Re: Finance Committee Meeting 2026
Free Junior Bronze is an entirely pointless category (as has been pointed out above, juniors only wanting to play local league chess are as rare as hens' teeth, and anyway Free Junior Gold allows them to do only that if that's what they want). The Board wanted to abolish it. A vociferous minority at...
