Re: Bob Long
I was very sorry to read about Bob's death.
I bought my BCM run off Bob back in 2001 or 2002. As I recall he was straightforward, honest, just a little bit tetchy, and a real straight shooter. A pleasure to deal with, and a sad loss indeed.

Re: Chess history trivia
Per my 1855 edition of Liddell and Scott:
"καλλισφυροϛ, beautiful-ankled, of women". No mention of hammers, I'm afraid.
"σφυρον, the ankle". (neuter noun)
"σφυρα, a hammer". (feminine noun)

Re: Council Papers are out
Well, David, you have the explanation. It’s your prerogative to disagree with my view - as indeed it is mine to disagree with yours.

Re: Council Papers are out
The paper was written to reflect the fact that many people would be reading the paper for the first time on or only shortly before the day of the Council meeting and so to reflect the position as it was expected to be (and indeed will be) as at the day of the Council meeting. The intention was to he...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals
The Board spends many hours discussing and writing both the Strategy and Business Plan and the Board Report to Council before both documents are submitted to Council for approval. I would consider it not unreasonable to expect Council members to take the trouble to spend ten minutes or so reading th...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals
ECF Boards have something of a habit of making strategic decisions without getting them approved or rubber stamped by the bi-annual meetings of the ECF Council. Well, that's just a fabrication on your part. All strategic initiatives are included in the Strategy and Business Plan submitted to Counci...

Re: New International Junior Chess Organisation for Great Britain
" 'Not so fast', the Golux said. 'Half the places I have been to, never were. I make things up. Half the things I say are there cannot be found. When I was young I told a tale of buried gold, and men from leagues around dug in the woods. I dug myself.' 'But why?' 'I thought the tale of buried treas...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF
I think you’ll find that the primary vector for transmission is the carios erraticus tick, and thus it is an arbovirus.
But I may be wrong.
