Re: Counties and clubs

Posters to this thread may find the chingland website interesting: https://mjh.orpheusweb.co.uk/chingland/cframe.htm. I haven't looked at it for a few years and when I just looked now it seems it's no longer being kept up to date, which is a pity.

Re: Counties and clubs

Surrey had RAE Farnborough (Hampshire) and there are lots of teams with London postcodes. I think Crystal Palace might actually be in Kent? Streatham, Battersea etc are South of the Thames and were probably in Surrey at one stage in their history. There was a Kent club about 15 years ago, but I can...

Re: David Glueck (Oxfordshire team 1991-2)

Looking at the SCCU bulletins September 1991 to July 1992 (on the SCCU website) it is revealed that D Glueck played in most of Oxfordshire's county matches that season with a single loss to SH (has to be Steve) Berry, and wins over N (has to be Neil) L(?) Mcdonald by adjudication, JP Manley, FJ Kwia...

Re: Intersection between academia and international chess titles

According to the 1993 yearbook board 1 of the 1991/2 County Championships Finals (Beds vs Oxfordshire) was A Ledger 1/2 D Glueck. D Glueck also played in the semifinal on board 2 against Surrey: D Glueck 1/2 G.Wall.

Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open

In terms of the terminology of the new ECF rating rules, FIDE uses the K formula approach to calculate TPRs whereas the 400's formula uses the P formula approach. You can find details of how P ratings are calculated versus K ratings on the ECF rating site under "Help".

Re: Channel Tunnel Shares in 1942

Studies/plans/ pilot borings for a channel tunnel started in the nineteenth century. Between 1929 and 1960 there was a parliamentary Channel Tunnel Committee and an engineer from the "Channel Tunnel Company" served on this committee since the start. Although I have no other information about this co...

I am also (slightly) irritated by this habit but I don't think there are grounds for claiming it is distracting behaviour as the game hasn't started yet.

Re: ECF ratings.

Thank you both. One follow-up question: Would the old system have brought me back to the 2013 level (one can hope!) faster than in the new system, or is the answer there that it depends on the number of games played? In the old system, I was very active for a number of years (over 100 games in some...

Re: ECF meeting reports

This will in turn potentially see more delegates going to council with different ideas and perspectives. Would it not be just as likely that the collectors of proxies would have a field day? The proxy system is just one of the many unsatisfactory aspects of the present regime. ... My understanding ...

Kenneth W Lloyd appears in some BCF grading books I have: 1996/7: C192 (previously 189) 1997/8: D192 1998/9: D193 1999/2000: D188 He doesn't appear in any booklets I have after 99/2000 (well, not the next 2), indicating that he had stopped playing at that point. In all cases he is listed as a member...

Władysław Gliński (article in Portuguese Wikipedia)

Do you recognise Gliński from that photo?
Yes, that's him - I had a few chats/ games of hexagonal chess with him when I spotted him in the shop (he employed a full-time manager).

Re: Chess history trivia

The "first theories of hexagonal chess" was probably by Glinski. I lived in Clapham Park from 1973 to 1975 and this gentleman opened a shop on Abbeville Road marketing equipment for playing the game (his invention). I still have the board I bought from him and I have probably got the book somewhere,...

Re: ICL Pathway (Fujitsu) Curiosity

I think a poor system specification/ software design is too blame. A minimum requirement of such a system should be that the users can print out a list of all transactions for any day to see where errors have occurred and check the balance by hand. From what we have heard they were not able to do th...
