County Championships National Stage 2019/2020.
I am disappointed to see the proposal that this be abandoned. I understand the reasoning (only 50% of counties/ unions want to continue so it wouldn't be the normal competition) but what about those of us who do want to play? I'll raise this at the Finance Council if there are some others who feel t...

Re: Could everyone lose their grade
Also, how much longer will the grading history under the old system be made available (I have a note somewhere to download the personal data from that) and is there an easy way to download or request that data (i.e. one's own personal grading history)? Try the following: 1. Go to your personal rati...

Re: Chess on TV
MCO 10 (the 1st chess book I bought) does have the same line. It goes down to 9. ... O-O in column 15 on on page 10 and then the game continues in note l on page 12 upt to "15. Q-Q5 (Hajek-Richter, Prague 1949( is unclear". So both MCO 10 and 11 omit the continuation 15. ... BxP 16. PxB P-QR3 which ...

I used to work in the Origami Ministry but we all fell victim to the government's paper cuts.

Re: Events Director OTB chess
Council will be asked to elect somebody to this role in October (at the AGM). This could be Shohreh or it could be somebody else. The board will presumably report its action at Finance Council in April but there wouldn't normally be a vote by Council on the matter at that point.

Re: General Reference Books for Chess Openings
There is only one edition of Nunn's Chess Openings: the original published in 1999.
I don't think this type of book is going to be published any more (overtaken by computer databases).

Re: Master List
The masterlist was very useful for checking/ including the ages of juniors when doing a grading submission for a junior tournament run by somebody else. In the absence of new masterlists I haven't been running the checker program when submitting online results and the checker program was very useful...

Re: Master List
The ECF online ratings seem to be produced in a rather ad hoc manner. Players are identified by ECF membership numbers rather than grading codes, but I was advised that submitting results in the old format was acceptable (#pin1=etc) which does entail using the old (#bcfcode) identification. By the w...

Re: 4NCL On-Line Season 3
Have the ECF membership rules changed? What you say would not have been the case in the past. Previously, memberships could be purchased from July onwards for the following year, so a non-member (re)joining in July would get membership for 14 months. I think this was a side effect of the way the pr...

Re: Remembering IM Hugh Alexander CMG CBE (19-iv-1909 15-ii-1974)
I posted on another thread (some time ago) that I visited Bath on one day and my abiding memories are seeing all the other Soviet GMs gathered around Karpov's game and managing to have a conversation with Petrosian (probably translated by the KGB man) about the possibilities of computer chess (he co...

Re: British Championship Congress 2021
Another consideration is the financial viability. Torquay is a popular venue but these days it costs us money (when I was on the ECF board I recall it cost about £10K). It was always the aim for the British to break even but I think this is more difficult now entry conditions for the main event are ...

Re: London Chess Association?
During part of the time I was on the SCCU executive I represented the SCCU on the London Chess Association and (as the body never met) this was a particularly easy task. I have a vague recollection of the LCA doing or being responsible for something in the last 10 years or so but the details escape ...
