Re: 2020 Legends of chess 21 July to 5 August

They had a game at an Olympiad several years ago where I can remember Ivanchuk being very upset when he only drew after pushing for a win with black. I think they kept the camera on him for several minutes afterwards, first as he sat in despair at the board, then as he wandered around the room which...

Re: World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2019

Nothing wrong with the rule in my opinion. As long as there is an increment then you should never flag in a position like this - but if a player wants to take the risk of regularly moving with 1 second left as Firouzja was doing then they can't complain when accidents like this happen. Though it's s...

Re: British Knock out 2019

In one of his pre-round speeches, the organiser of the British rapidplay said that he wanted to FIDE rate it but apparently the ECF said it would have cost £800 so he didn't bother. I could have misheard though as this sounds pretty unlikely but I know nothing about such things.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Some of the computer lines in Caruana-Anton lead to the same ending as Carlsen-Matlakov (with a b-pawn instead of a c-pawn), maybe the arbiters need to move Carlsen into the other room so Caruana can't copy him ...

Re: Good/Bad things from the British 2019

Adams and Gordon both appeared in the commentary room at least twice. I agree that the commentary was very good.

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

Just played through the Arkell game on the tablebase, the position after 63...Kxc5 is a win, after 64.Rg4 it's a draw (Re4 or Rh4 are correct). Then after 64...Bc7 (Be1!) it's a win again and 65.Ke3 (Rg7!) gives it away. I think the logic behind all this is that white needs to stop the black king re...

Re: Jaan Ehlvest blunders a piece on move 5

Here is a link to Benjamin's comments after the game (starts at about 3:03:00) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o99-4nSJUPY The clocks times were correct and 30...Kc8 was played, but apparently Ehlvest had offered a draw at move 28 which was accepted but they had forgotten about the 30 move limit so ...

If Hou Yifan had decided to play then Goryachkina wouldn't have even got in the tournament!

Re: Needing to be ECF member to play in British Championships?

Hmmm, well you can count me among that number! Every year I wait until around now until I decide whether to enter and I always end up playing, but the ridiculous £75 late fee may sway me the other way this time.

Re: Candidates 2019

I have never really understood why it's a such problem if they always play a quick draw. In fact I preferred the way the Kosintsevas did it by just playing exactly the same game every time so there was no doubt what was going on. They might get 2 extra rest days but on the other hand they have 2 few...

Re: https://greatbritainjuniorsquad.com/official-partners/

This has been a most pleasing thread. If someone had asked me a few days ago how many Opens I've won I would have said 5 (Bradford 2006, York 2011, Huddersfield 2015, Bradford 2017, Doncaster 2019). Little did I know that I should be counting things like the Huddersfield individual knockout, Idle ra...

Re: In addition to...

As someone who gets annoyed by people offering draws when they are clearly worse (even if it's not my game!), I would welcome any ideas to put a stop to it. At the moment there is no downside. So how about this idea which I've just thought of: If someone offers a draw and goes on to lose they should...

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Black resigned a theoretically drawn position Black resigned a totally lost position. It may have been drawn a move earlier. But now, after B played 142..Ke6??? 143 Kb5 & 144 RxB wins Are you sure? I copied the PGN from chess24 which ended after White's 142nd. It's on the video, he played Ke6 and r...

Re: How to improve digital chess clocks

Why not use the byo-yomi setting? E.g. All moves in 90 minutes and once you run out of time you get 5 seconds per move for the rest of the game. I've always thought this was the ideal solution but for some reason it's never been tried. No 10.2 nonsense and the playing session isn't going to be exten...
