Re: Candidates 2019

If Hou Yifan had decided to play then Goryachkina wouldn't have even got in the tournament!

Re: Needing to be ECF member to play in British Championships?

Hmmm, well you can count me among that number! Every year I wait until around now until I decide whether to enter and I always end up playing, but the ridiculous £75 late fee may sway me the other way this time.

Re: Candidates 2019

I have never really understood why it's a such problem if they always play a quick draw. In fact I preferred the way the Kosintsevas did it by just playing exactly the same game every time so there was no doubt what was going on. They might get 2 extra rest days but on the other hand they have 2 few...

Re: https://greatbritainjuniorsquad.com/official-partners/

This has been a most pleasing thread. If someone had asked me a few days ago how many Opens I've won I would have said 5 (Bradford 2006, York 2011, Huddersfield 2015, Bradford 2017, Doncaster 2019). Little did I know that I should be counting things like the Huddersfield individual knockout, Idle ra...

Re: In addition to...

As someone who gets annoyed by people offering draws when they are clearly worse (even if it's not my game!), I would welcome any ideas to put a stop to it. At the moment there is no downside. So how about this idea which I've just thought of: If someone offers a draw and goes on to lose they should...

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Black resigned a theoretically drawn position Black resigned a totally lost position. It may have been drawn a move earlier. But now, after B played 142..Ke6??? 143 Kb5 & 144 RxB wins Are you sure? I copied the PGN from chess24 which ended after White's 142nd. It's on the video, he played Ke6 and r...

Re: How to improve digital chess clocks

Why not use the byo-yomi setting? E.g. All moves in 90 minutes and once you run out of time you get 5 seconds per move for the rest of the game. I've always thought this was the ideal solution but for some reason it's never been tried. No 10.2 nonsense and the playing session isn't going to be exten...

Re: Chess.com Isle Of Man Tournament 20 to 28 October 2018

The tie break is the results between the players involved in the tie (which won't apply as they are all unbeaten) then sum of progressive scores. Assuming I've worked these out correctly it favours the players in this order: Naiditsch Wang Xiong MVL Wojtaszek Jones So Jones can't possibly reach the ...

They were in the playing hall when I finished at about 8:30. My game wasn't too far away I didn't pick up on anything unusual going on.

Re: Altibox Norway 2019 - the future of chess?

I don't mind the idea of a blitz play off in the event of a draw but it's so disappointing that they are reverting to time controls without increments. I suppose we can look forward to more farcical finishes like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWVuO66JnlQ I don't really care if they use incre...

I think it was because Huang took a minute or so deciding whether to play Rf5 or g1Q at the end but after such a game you could hardly blame her for triple-checking everything so I wouldn't have called it a slow-roll.

As the king of losing on time for every reason going. Last 12 months A) analogue clock couldnt see the dial. (Won position lost the county team the match) B) Thought the extra time had not been added when it had. (Actually have done this twice). (Another county game in a won position) C) Thought my...

What happened in Wall v Gormally? Showing as 0-1 but white looks much better to me. Surely not a repeat of last year ...? chess-results says Gormally did win, so does anyone know what happened after 42 Qxd5 ? http://chess-results.com/tnr367973.aspx?lan=1&art=2&rd=4&flag=30 I don't know what happene...

I've never had a problem playing in that room in previous years (2014-2017, I'm sure some of those had equally hot weather) but it was awful yesterday. I regularly had to go into the other room just to try and cool down, and I was closest to the door. I don't know how the Lancashire bottom board cou...
