Re: Who was L. Alexander?

Could "Captain O. Range" actually be Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, going incognito (hiding in plain sight)? Wow! The likeness is striking. I never heard that Prins Bernhard was a chess player, maar je weet maar nooit! I shall have to ask... UPDATE: My Dutch friends don't believe the photograp...

Re: Who was L. Alexander?

It seem unlikely to be van Hulst, because he remained in the Netherlands during WWII.

Re: Who was L. Alexander?

It is possible that Capt. O. Range was a member of the (Dutch) Royal Household, the name a nod to the House of Oranje-Nassau. Queen Wilhelmina was evacuated to London, where she was damned well nearly killed by a German bombing raid, and where she took an active role in supporting her country's resi...

Re: Digital Clock Repairs

John, Are you able to repair other DGT clocks, such as the Easy Plus, the 3000 or the 2500? Do you have circuit diagrams or service manuals for various DGT clocks? Or could you put together a short guide for the rest of use, who would be happy to attempt repairs, but don't have much of clue where to...

Re: DGT E-boards

Managed to get them connected yesterday, after some experiments the previous Saturday. However, I assumed that the boards would be 1 - 10 according to their position in the chain of serial cables, however, they were number 1 to 10 according to eBoard serial numbers. Do I have to link the boards in s...

DGT E-boards

Can anyone advise how to connect a string of DGT E-boards? Richmond Juniors have invested (quite a serious lot of) money in the things. Our set-up is the modern Smart Boards with USB connectors, and then USB to serial, followed by serial to USB, ultimately connected into a PC. However, reading the i...

Re: Media comments on chess

"Qh4" was the answer to the sequence f3, e5, g4 in "Only Connect." The clues and the answer being the sequence of moves in a Fool's Mate, which according to Victoria Coren is a "mate in four moves."

Re: Swiss Manager Question

Anyone know what functionality "Cutoff Date" has in the Set-Up Tournament / Tournament Data dialogue screen? It sets the base date for classifying by age as players are input from an import file. So, you could set the tournament as e.g. age by calendar year (FIDE) or e.g. age by academic year (EPSC...

Re: Too much dishonesty in chess

How much ? I believe the formula, δ(rating) = 800 - 0.4 x rating applies to FIDE ratings below 2000, derived from determing the slope and intercept for a straight line with fixed points (1000, 400) and (2000, 0). It might be handier to express the formula as: r(new) = 0.6 x r(old) + 800. If this is...

Re: FIDE ratings revaluation

If I have read the updated FIDE Handbook, correctly, from March of this year, no player will be able to obtain an initial rating in excess of 2200: 8.2.3 Ru = Ra + dp Ru is rounded to the nearest whole number. The maximum initial rating is 2200. This seems to me to be a rather strange restriction, w...

Anyone know what the function "Show Protocol in Editor" does in Swiss Mangler? I assume that it shows the protocol in the editor. Are you getting this as an option on the upload to chess-results.com function? It shows some information about the transfer in in the configured List directory. The file...

Re: Ukraine

I suppose you must have missed the NATO sponsored coup in 2014. That is the most comical example of the blinkered falling for the scam I have read in 2023. "NATO sponsored coup". Wiping tears from my eyes here. Scores of Ukrainians died in Maidan for the ideal of democracy, liberalism, a rejection ...

Re: Jumping titles

Did the players concerned actually apply for those titles, or has FIDE given them the titles after the fact?

Re: Jumping titles

Thanks for the detail, Matt. It is still true that Kasparov went from unrated to GM in a very short period?
