Re: Postponement - official

I think we should place on record our thanks to the officials of the 4NCL and indeed the ECF who are dealing with a situation no-one could have envisaged even a few weeks ago. Let us hope that by the time August is here that chess will be back to something like normality. Clearly my optimism above ...

Re: Event Cancellation

With reference to the Roger's last post about the 4NCL, their website is still advertising their 25th Congress scheduled for Crewe in mid-July. I would be extremely surprised if that went ahead. Similarly the rescheduling of the League itself at Telford at the end of August. From what we see on her...

Re: 4NCL Online

There's a new statement about banned players at the 4NCL website. Given that a ban by chess.com provoked a withdrawal by a division 1 team, I feel the tone of the comments is self congratulatory. The team withdrawal isn't mentioned, nor are what sanctions, if any, are applied to team results when p...

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

Fair point, you can include myself in the list of those struggling, I only know one person who isn't Some considerable time ago I recall some market research was conducted on chess; amongst other things they found was that chess players were statistically significantly more likely to be unmarried a...

Re: Media comments on chess

Neil, You could ask her on linkedin. I believe the probability is high. I have no reason to be on linkedin myself and decided after several requests from people I vaguely know over the years to be a contact that there was no point in joining. So if anyone else is interested in this please feel free...

Re: Media comments on chess

Could I ask out of interest if Leila Nathoo, who appears regularly as a political correspondent on the BBC News, was British Under 10 Girls Champion in 1995?

Re: David Fewkes

Thank you for that observation, Neil. (Also, thanks to Kevin Thurlow for his rememberance.) David Fewkes was a Notts Forest supporter and had a running banter battle with club sec. David Hodgson a Crystal Palace fan. Not sure if David was a lifelong Forest man. (Could he have been a follower of Clo...

Re: what happens when you pass away as a chess player??

Neil - that's all very well in theory, but is only practical where the player continues to be active and/or in contact with the chess community until they depart. The grading list contains many players young as well as old who play a limited amount and then vanish completely. I've had the experienc...

Re: what happens when you pass away as a chess player??

When someone unfortunately is deceased, your local grader should be informed so the ECF grading system can be amended to show (deceased). Bearing in mind that the on-line data goes back to 1994 there must be dozens of players who have passed on, often with no one being aware.

Re: Worrying times

Was thinking BBC should cancel all these repeated cookery, make over, buy antiques programs and put on basic educational programmes instead. There will be 100's in archives. Recall Bob Hoskins doing one on basic maths. Take Care. The programme you're thinking of with Bob Hoskins dealt with illitera...
