Ian Thackray

It is with sad and heavy heart that I report that my good friend, Ian Thackray, passed away earlier this week. Ian was the long time captain of one of the Rose Forgrove teams based in Leeds, a club he joined as a young junior in the nineties. He also played for Bradford Chess Club and was a supporte...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

To start OTB chess, venues will need to be following the latest guidance and complete a Covid Secure Risk Assessment. I think it is optimistic to think we will have leagues running by Autumn. I fear it will be more likely that some form of OTB chess will resume after the new year. https://www.gov.uk...

I know. It's quite a challenge, but as some have suggested maybe the future will be events where all players are encouraged to use engines. Maybe I will organise one!
I think these tournaments are already running. See ICCF

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

[quote="J T Melsom" post_id=244285 time=1588858226 user_id=5872 I wonder whether larger halls such as might be used for county fixtures might be capable of compliance with ongoing social distancing - clubs might then consider booking such venues and using them for more than one fixture or even a rou...

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

Despite the potential easing of restrictions to be announced by the government on Monday I doubt very much that we will be back to normal anytime soon. I think we will be asked to continue with social distancing into early next year. It could be even longer if waiting for a suitable vaccine is the o...

Re: Adrian Dawson

I got to know Adrian well when I first took the role of President of the Yorkshire Chess Association in the early 90s. He was the Correspondence Chess Controller as well as delegate for NCCU and BCF. He wrote a regular column in the Halifax Courier and kept this going for nearly a decade. I always r...

Re: Covid-19 - Suspend Chess Immediately

David. A simple solution is that you can, as an individual, self isolate from taking part in any chess activity you wish.

Mark is the person who runs TWIC. I don't think they mean you when they made reference to Mark's Twitter account.

This result should be on the TV evening national news. Who's the ECF publicity director again?

Re: Anne Sunnucks/Mothersill (1927-2014)

From Rupert Jones: Stuart Johnson and myself met up with Anne after Stuart was contacted around 2005/6 as she was shedding some of her old chess equipment stock which included oddly a box of cricket balls. I remember a lot of Lino chess boards. We visited about three times and both her and her husba...

Re: Anne Sunnucks/Mothersill (1927-2014)

Anne lived in Menston near Leeds and Bradford in the early to mid eighties. I managed to get her to play a couple of seasons for Bradford in the Woodhouse cup. I will try to check my old records to find out exactly when she played.

Re: Yorkshire grading system

Hi Jon, Thank you for all your efforts over the years. Chessnuts is a tremendous site and I will miss checking individual player league records for all the leagues. The Bradford league agreed at their AGM to affiliate in its entirety to the ECF grading system and adopt the ECF League Management Syst...

Re: Yorkshire grading system

That's reassuring to know Nick. I think moving to ECF grading is inevitable. How quickly it is done is anybody's guess. The next few weeks of Yorkshire local league AGMs will be interesting. I do expect ECF membership numbers in Yorkshire may be rising by the end of summer. It will be interesting to...
