Re: Historical British tournaments: latest BritBase updates
Fazekas's unexpected success. I had a look at his games from the British and the following Hastings. His contemporaries thought he lacked opening knowledge although with the benefit of history you can perhaps see that his use of club player favourites worked well against his opponents in the Britis...

Re: The English Language
What's the difference between losing the queen to Rg1 and losing the queen with Rg1 ? You might be White and lost the queen to a move Rg1 by Black. Alternatively you played Rg1 as White and this lost the queen. Common usage would be that losing .. to is a move played by your opponent, however losin...

Re: Piece values
What's the basis for assigning numerical values 1-3-5-9 to pieces? Lost in the mists of time I should imagine. It seems to work as a broad rule of thumb for a basic evaluation. The earliest writings on chess theory were by Philidor and then later by Staunton. Did these authors propose theories of p...

Re: Cheating in chess
Ethics Commission has delivered a light punishment to a Russian GM who has made unsubstantiated accusations on the Internet against a young female player. Part of the accusation appeared to relate to an overheard conversation in the Ladies. Even if true, that doesn't have to suggest computer cheati...

Re: GDPR : What are the implications for LMS systems ?
Why is date of birth necessary? Surely it goes against the principle that data should only be collected to the extent that it is necessary or serves a useful purpose? Age related prizes (obviously) as well as player identification. The ECF uses age as part of its grading calculations for junior pla...

Re: County Championship Consultation
I was wondering when Osfordshire disappeared as a County - does anyone know? Early 2000s I would think. It only disappeared from the SCCU competition, rather it concentrated its efforts on fielding teams in the more local Chiltern competitions and in the 4NCL. In the 4NCL, the venues have never bee...

Re: Not pressing the clock
Do we really have anything to back up "trained"? Anecdotal experience perhaps, but watching a morning game at Hastings, I observed a local junior player sitting very quietly while his opponent's time ran down. Eventually the opponent pressed the clock and the lad moved immediately. Mentioning this ...

Re: Not pressing the clock
How many times per game? There surely comes a point when you get fed up with it. I would do it once, after that it's my opponent's problem if he or she should repeat. Against a really confused opponent you have the additional risk that they might move twice. If a past world championship contender c...

Re: FIDE internal fighting
I've started a new thread. I don't think the Laws prevent you from moving although with increments you still want the clock to be pressed.

Not pressing the clock
He was even more unimpressed by his loss on time to an 11-year-old after he (Nigel) forgot to press his clock... Something of a modern trend perhaps, that younger players appear trained to sit with a poker face when their opponent has failed to press the clock. Otherwise they could play a move or o...

Re: Historical British tournaments: latest BritBase updates
Dr Fazekas being excluded from the 1958 Olympiad team An interesting snippet from the 1958 report is that the BCF held what was described as a "annual members’ meeting" during the Congress. Whether this was an AGM, A Council meeting (or then equivalent) or something rather less formal wasn't stated...

Re: County Championship Consultation
Still only need 3 weekends for this competition so again no different to the current ECF stages In terms of competing for available weekends with summer Congresses, then no different. Are you not proposing though that weekends 2 and 3 will have matches on both the Saturday and Sunday? For teams wit...

Re: Latest Bristol Chess Times
There's a good quip about that French Exchange line The game quoted starts out as another rare treatment, namely 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Qd5. Checking my collection of British games, a handful of players have used it a few times, in fact there are more games than with .. Qxd5 in the E...
