Re: july grades

There appears to be a problem with the list, I (selectively!) quote a colleague and grader as follows: "If you check your personal page you will find you're shown as having played some number "x" games over the last 12 months. However, if you then click on "Standard games played, last 12 months" you...

Nathan Goldberg

I am sad to report the death of Nathan Goldberg who passed away suddenly in his home city of Glasgow at the weekend. Nathan was a keen amateur chess player and entrepreneur. He was at one time the youngest recorded editor of a British daily newspaper when he edited the Scottish Daily News and used h...

Re: Incremental time controls

I played at the Weald Congress, and also the recent Guildford open club championship (same 80+10 limits). The Mid-Sussex League AGM recently also agreed to an (optional if both players agree) 80+10 limit which I was pleased by. It is an excellent balance between ensuring completion of a congress rou...

Re: University chess clubs

Enthusiasts arriving at a university with no established club may effectively have to mark time for a year before they can get a university team into the local league. No surprise that the enthusiast finds it simpler to join an existing local club. Sussex Uni have entered a team in the Mid-Sussex L...

Re: Dealing with a crisis as a captain

As a captain I have from time to time recorded in circumstances where both players were very short of time. I do this on my own initiative and try to keep the fact that I am doing it hidden from the players, although that is hard to do. I do this partly in case of a dispute later, partly so my play...

Re: Digital Clocks - issues arising from introduction

I've always felt that players should play under the same conditions. The type of clock does not necessarily have to mean all the players play to the same time limits. In the Mid-Sussex League a quickplay finish (with attendant differing intermediate time control) can be played if both players agree...

Re: Digital Clocks - issues arising from introduction

Quote "usually at an AGM when everyone is present". Quite a few of my club deliberately miss the AGM because it's boring and we aren't playing chess. That said, it is usually over in less than an hour and the chess then starts. Robert Oh for all AGMs to be less than an hour! Ours have featured othe...

Re: Digital Clocks - issues arising from introduction

Funds-wise we bought our clocks from money raised by bequests so I'll let others comment on more practical measures! Rates of play have not changed at Horsham with the introduction of digitals - our time limits for internal games mirror the league we play in so that new club members can get used to ...

Re: Touch move rule

In my last tournament - about 14 months ago - my opponent kept saying "adjust" when he adoubed the pieces. Perhaps that is common usage now. Indeed. I still use j'adoube but only through years of habit. The juniors I teach are brought up on 'adjust' and took great delight in recently learning that ...
