Re: Is This Arbiter's Interpretation of the Laws Correct?
I present an extract from Hans Olav Lahlum's instructions to the players in the Fagerness tournament: “Important information for all hotel guests: Following the Norwegian fire regulations, it is strictly forbidden to make any kind of hot meals with any kind of electronic or manual equipment inside t...

Re: Manchester in the NCCU
I would think that the late player should have been defaulted one hour after the scheduled start of the match. But once he had been allowed to start, it seems wholly unreasonable to stop the game later and then try to claim the default. In the circumstances, the 0-0 result looks right. But two playe...

Re: FIDE General Assembly
I agree with Jack and Roger. Also, the cross on the top of the king is just to distinguish easily from the queen, and the pieces are called different things in different languages. In German, the bishop is a runner, the knight is a jumper, the rook is a tower (tall building not someone who tows a ca...

Re: FIDE General Assembly
I have received an email from someone calling himself Xerxes. There are about 100 recipients openly copied, some very distinguished, others less so... "Dear members of the International Chess Federation, Chess is a game with a long history. It originated in Hindu India before spreading to Zoroastria...

Re: Is This Arbiter's Interpretation of the Laws Correct?
"We agreed the draw although I've known players who, given the same circumstances, would try to claim a win on time. Is there a definite ruling on this?" I think you did the right thing, and unless you have an arbiter actually watching (in a tournament), the draw is the right result. If I were such ...

Re: Media comments on chess
"Neighbours" today featured chess again. Paul Robinson was expertly setting up the board 9 the knights were facing inwards, not justly randomly positioned), as he talked to another character, the camera shot changed, but now the black pieces were on his side of the board, when previously he had the ...

Re: Actors and Masters
I believe "Chess Fever" (1925) may count. It is fiction, but includes Capablanca as himself.

"Ready Steady Go! (with Cathy "Oi'll give it foive" McGowan) comes to mind ..."
Surprisingly, that only ran from 1963 - 1966.

Re: Britbase Updates
Thanks - I saw him a lot when living and playing in the South-East. He was clearly a devout Christian. At an Easter Congress he was heard shouting in the street approaching the venue, "Rejoice, Christ is risen!" He always had a carrier bag with him, and we found an abandoned one at the tournament. A...

Re: OGWT
Top of the Pops dealt with the singles charts and I suspect most of those were the usual 2.5 - 3 minute songs (although Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975 was longer). OGWT usually covered tracks that were frequently longer and not, er, "pop". It's all a matter of taste. The well-known and controversial clas...

There's a mention of STK Wilkinson in the junior event - I assume he is no longer with us?

Re: Reykjavik 2024
I meant to comment that the venue is great. I went in 2018 and was impressed that the bar had a "Happy Hour" during the tournament, where beer was half-price (bringing it down to roughly London prices...). But the definition of "Hour" was "throughout the playing session, and beyond", to ensure that ...

Re: OGWT
OGWT was on fairly late on BBC2 I think, so probably did not have a massive audience. I watched occasionally, and saw Meat Loaf (1978), which featured the first TV broadcast of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", (performed live), I think he did "Bat out of Hell" and another track also. Needless to s...
