Re: New in Chess Classic 24 April to 2 May 2021

"So what's the cut-throat bit"

The difference between 8th and 9th (which will probably be on tie-break) may make a large financial difference? I suppose the cut-throat bit might be journalistic hyperbole.

If Gawain is starting at 5 am, he will definitely need coffee.

Re: Four rounds to go: would you bet on Nepo or the rest?

I went for Nepo as he's leading, but my predictions are usually wrong, so I hope I haven't ruined his chances. This has been an interesting event as I'm not really bothered who wins, usually I'm cheering somebody on, which is way too stressful.

"Is it just that I haven't had coffee yet, or does this not make sense?"

I haven't had coffee either - does it mean an all-play-all qualifier to take the top 8 into the KO? I might be missing something?

Re: Media comments on chess

Not sure it counts, but I have been reading Barack Obama's autobiography and on page 457, he refers to "chess master Garry Kasparov". It's an interesting book. Only 300 pages to go. In contrast, Nicholas Rhea's "Constable Around the Village", book 3 in the series that became "Heartbeat", has an inci...

Waterstones have https://www.waterstones.com/book/9780600637189

"Basic Chess is the book you need to master the game." may be optimistic, but they are trying to sell the book. I share Justin's suspicion of the review on the Barnes and Noble site.

"Andrew is no longer with us."

I know - the bit I quoted describes him as "late". He and I may have exchanged emails at one stage.

"The minutes seem to imply some connection between Kirsan and Agon, being that Kirsan financed Agon in some manner and would now like to own it in lieu of debt repayment, or was he owning or financing it all along, despite the denials of the late Andrew Paulson?" I have to report I today received an...

"If you want to know who James and Jake are (and I didn’t) then purchase the Yearbook!"

A bit harsh - why don't you want to know who they are?

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

It now seems that it is unlikely that Covid is transmissible by touching hard surfaces, but it was a sensible precaution when we didn't know... Similarly, if you work in a laboratory and encounter a white solid, you don't taste it!

Re: Cheating in chess

"The only possible 'legitimate' explanation I can think of is that it is essentially a lichess test account operating on the live system, used to measure the frequency with which such sandbagging play gets reported." An interesting idea - a friend who plays a lot of games (not just chess) online sai...

"Laurence Harvey was the principal guest actor"

Yes - he died shortly afterwards (stomach cancer) aged only in his mid-40s.

"On freeview channel 5USA tonight there is an old Columbo film "The Most Dangerous Match" - the synopsis is "An American chess champion fears he is about to be beaten by a superior player from Russia, and decides the only sure-fire way he can avoid defeat is by murdering his opponent."" It's quite e...

"It's rather like describing homosexuality and left-handedness as "health problems", isn't it? None of these things are illnesses which can be "cured", although all have been regarded as such within the last 100 years and some people so regard at least one of them. Indeed. They're certainly not imag...

Re: Improve Your Life by Playing a Game

I was intrigued by, "Chapter 6, Theories and Studies on Benefits of Chess’, moves into rather different territory. We learn about chess and education, and about chess and health problems, though I for one would raise a very strong objection to describing ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder as health p...
