Re: Away player excluded
In Bristol we are friendly with other teams, have a chat before the game, and a pint afterwards. Are we doing something wrong?

Re: Earliest English Chess Clubs
The club I play for, Bristol & Clifton Chess Club (formerly Bristol Chess Club), founded 1829, claims to be the oldest club outside London. Any earlier ones?

Re: no recognition for finalists
Several years ago I won 4NCL 'player of the year' (div 3, I'm not that good). I received a small trophy, which was nice, but it wasn't engraved, which wasn't so nice. I was told I could get it engraved myself if I wanted! Years later it sits on a shelf, still unengraved. At least when people ask wha...

Re: Etiquette of resigning
I've been pretty lucky, not had to deal with some of the nonsense listed here. I've had one person walk off without shaking hands, but that's it. I always try to have a few friendly words with my opponent before a game, maybe that helps.

Re: Etiquette of resigning
What's happening to our lovely game?
The etiquette of resigning is quite simple:
Smile
Hold out your hand, and congratulate your opponent on a good game
Offer to buy your opponent a drink
(if they're a proper lady/gentleman they'll buy you one - winner buys is the rule)

Re: Is it rude / insulting not to resign?
My rule for resignation: Resign if you're sure that your opponent will beat you in the given position
Addendum to rule: Resign earlier if the bar's open

Re: Mobile Phones (and Grandmasters)
I'm in favour of the draconian approach too. The most important thing however is clarity in the rules. The upcoming (closed) Bristol League Congress rules leave no room for doubt: "ALL MOBILE PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF. Owners of phones found to be switched on during play will lose their game, and a ...

Re: The grading of adjourned/adjudicted games
I’m against adjournment and adjudication for any games, and don’t believe they should be graded. A game should be between two players, not between two players, their computers, their friends and anonymous adjudicators. I understand the arguments for adjournment, especially regarding the decline ...

Re: Drinking at the board.
Perfect subject for my first post! Beer and chess go very well together in my opinion. I try to avoid drinking (while playing) at the 4NCL, unless we get past the first time control in a placid position, when I may have a pint. League and tournament chess is different, I'm rarely seen without a beer...
