Re: 2018 World Championship in London?

Caruana signs up . I haven't seen any online confirmation of this, I believe that today is the deadline, have Carlsen and Caruana signed on the dotted line? :o I don't think of myself as an Agon apologist, but how much more confirmation of Caruana signing up do you need than the guy who's organisin...

Re: British Over 65 Championship 2018

While I don't wish to make a big point about this, can anyone explain why in addition to the separate 50+ and 65+ British Championships, there are (rather good) prizes for competition among 50+ players who prefer to enter the 'main' Championships yet no prizes for 65+ players who do the same? They ...

Re: British Championship 2018

They will appear. They're going to be input this week. I wasn't there because I decided not to be an arbiter/staff team member at this year's event, in order to let other people have a turn. I hadn't appreciated that this meant there would be a lack of games-inputting resource compared with previous...

Re: Batumi Olympiad

In terms of British connections, Helen Milligan is in the New Zealand women's team: http://chess-results.com/tnr368909.aspx?lan=1&art=8&snr=78 One English connection I doubt anyone would have spotted, but Joy Ching Li, who played in Warwickshire's county junior teams at Under 9 and Under 11 level as...

Re: British Championship 2018

However the first part of the claim, that reducing the number of rounds from 11 to 9 had some impact, makes no sense whatsoever unless you accept the false premise that correlation = causation. It might make more sense to you if you received the emails from the players that I did. To name one examp...

Re: British Championship 2018

Why is it though that in the last couple of years, the ECF has been unable to announce the dates and venue of the next year's competition during the previous one? Because venues are increasingly holding out for better offers than they can get from a chess tournament; i.e. ones that pay significantl...

Re: British Championship 2018

I hadn't seen anyone else calling it this. Is this debatable or was it really the strongest? The average rating of Mickey's opponents was 2526, compared with 2502 when he won in 2011, the only other real candidate. I wonder if the chopping off of the tail helped there as well, and the shortening of...

Re: Irish Championships 2018

I hope the ECF has learnt its lesson and doesn't let him back. While it won't be my job to do anything about it by then, I've put this on the list of things to sort out for 2019. While on the face of it this is not very impressive, has he actually transgressed any regulations? Of course it may just...

And now I see why Conor Murphy disappeared from Hull a couple of days ago!

Re: British Championship 2018

Just on the issue of qualification (mentioned briefly by Nick, above) as i don't think it has been commented on. It is possibly worth observing that of the 10 qualifiers from the new Qualifying Grand Prix, only one(!) is actually competing in the Championship. 2 are playing in the seniors O65, and ...

Re: Shreyas Royal breaks U10 record, poses ECF a question

The approach of successive governments towards chess has been: Charge the national governing bodies VAT Spend money fighting court cases that would potentially have made chess VAT-exempt Take away the already small grant awarded to the ECF Consistently reject the notion of chess being a sport Agains...

Re: 2019 British

but have you seen the size of the venues when the players championship are held? you need to check them out!! I have not. But again, in context, the prize fund of one Players Championship is in excess of the prize fund of the British Chess Championship - more than double in fact. And there are 22 o...

Re: 2019 British

it would be a idea to ask the ECF to tender someone to find Venues in the future for Events the PDC managed to find big venue for there events The PDC runs a £15m global tour, funded by corporate sponsorship and TV rights deals. But remember at the beginning, they only had one event on television, ...

Never mind Sheyras Royal's remarkable progress. Never mind Jones-Adams on Bd 1 Announcing Roger - Kevin in the Forum Championship. Tomorrow. 2.30pm. Bring flask and sandwiches Kevin undoubtedly preparing his secret weapon - talking to Roger before the game about the merits of the ECF Membership Sch...
