Re: Chess in the UK

One option could be to play unrated correspondence games as, if unrated, I believe it would be permissible to discuss the game as it developed (need to check that on the sites rules first). 'Lichess' is one good server. There may be good players on here willing to play you at correspondence and high...

Re: Chess Base is it worth it

Personally I prefer it when people have the courtesy to play 2. Bf4, since they are usually declaring their intent to play a London whilst if 2. Nf3, they might be intending 3. c4 or 3. Nc3 after 2. .. e6 or 2. ..g6 I've never thought the purpose of playing chess was to help your opponent know what...

Re: Chess Base is it worth it

Database program: Scid vs PC does a lot of what chessbase does but it isn't quite as user friendly. Albeit it's extremely good for a free program. You don't get the Chessbase Let's check functionality which I find useful which includes the ability to get your entire game analysed via distributed com...

Re: Sulky chess engines

If you want a competitive game, simply download one of the free engines that are significantly weaker and nearer your ELO (has the advantage that they don't play like Kasparov for 99% of the time with the odd blunder thrown in) List of engines here: http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/ Here's ...

Re: Chromebooks

Do you need an app? there are sites like chess microbase (http://www.chessmicrobase.com) if you just want to store your own games. This site has an inbuilt chess engine (2700 elo ish) for basic analysis also If you want to search a database of master games, you can access chessbase on line via the W...

Re: ECF demands more money

The ECF now has contact details for the majority of people that play graded chess in the UK. And I suspect the majority of those involve email addresses. Even if OMOV is not going to occur in the short term, on major issues the ECF could run on-line polls by emailing polls to those who are content t...

Re: Chessbase 13 released

I use google drive for file storage. chess microbase allows you more than file storage as entire program in browser so you can play through games, create new ones etc from multiple devices

Re: Chessbase 13 released

Is chessbase any better now? I always wanted to make myself a database but have heard so many bad things about it that put me off, high charges, lack of customer support and that the old versions become obsolete once the brand new chessbase comes out. It is pricey; never had any need for customer s...

Chessbase 13 released

Chessbase 13 has been released (http://shop.chessbase.com/en/products/chessbase13_mega_package_engl?ref=RF5-TYB55LUOVF). The main change seems to be to allow you to save your personal databases in the cloud so you can access them from multiple devices (ala chessmicrobase: http://chessmicrobase.com/)...

Re: Android App for Inputting Games

One thing I should add is that if you do look at chess microbase and setup an account I would change the settings on the board to high contrast. The default settings are too light I think. (I have a premium membership but there is a free version also if you don't need a large number of databases)

Re: Android App for Inputting Games

I now use chess microbase which is not an app but the website has a mobile version (http://chessmicrobase.com/) which is very good. You can input the games, save them in the cloud (only you have access unless you share a link with someone) and export in pgn if you need to. You could also try the che...

Re: Which chess websites would you recommend and why?

I suggests the following: Tactics : Chess Tempo at http://chesstempo.com/ Personal Database : Chess microbase at http://chessmicrobase.com/ I think this is a really great tool for those who want to store their games, or favourite openings, (privately) in the cloud and then access them whatever devic...
