Re: Media comments on chess

Looks like you missed Roger using the term"Arkell" ending of KRB v KR. a few post before mine. I ran that ending through chessgames.com to see how many you had...just curious to what your win/draw ratio was. Last I heard it was +18 =0 -0. Some comments on Keith’s ending here: http://streathambrixto...

Re: London Chess Classic

I’ve worked every year at Olympia for the past five years. Won’t be there this year. I was never involved in the main event or the tournaments for experienced chessers but I can tell you this: However much time and effort you think goes in to running the event, the reality is it’s more than that. Ma...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Where do you get the 35,000 number from? 75,000 divide by 2, take off a bit for those between games or just watching or browsing. That was my guess. It might be right, but we can all think of reasons why it might also be wrong. Indeed. And very probably the guesstimate is a huge overestimate of the...

I have written to ask
chess.com quote statistics on their home page.

As of a UK Sunday morning

Members 25,507,866
Games Today 3,060,922
Players Online 75,428
Titled Online 187

So that's probably around 35,000 games taken place presently.

Where do you get the 35,000 number from?

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

From the Guardian yesterday : Anyone seen the research to back up this claim on the number of games being played on the Internet - "Research suggests at least half a million games are going on at any one time."? When anybody. cites ‘research’ to justify a claim without actually telling you what tha...

What happens when people with no knowledge of chess write about the game? They tell you that Spassky won in 1972

Re: World Chess Chmpionship.

Was anyone else disappointed by the lack of mainstream domestic coverage? Given the relative popularity of chess in the UK compared with the popularity of other sports that could have been covered, I think it punched noticeably above its weight. Yes, I’d agreed with that overall. In terms of the am...

Re: Anyone else missing the C/Anand and C/Karjakin matches?

Twelve draws now. Anyone still thinking that Caruana has been a much better challenger for an entertaining match than Anand or Karjakin? Being an “entertaining” challenger isn’t a criteria that’s relevant during the selection process, is it? My problem with today isn’t it was the 12th draw per se. ...

Wouldn't it be better if they played the whole match in reverse order?
No. For the reasons that are mentioned whenever this is suggested (which are also the reasons why it’s never happened in football despite it being suggested for penalty shootouts for at least 25 years.)

Australian GM Ian Rogers:- “Falsely tarnishing the quality of the match you are promoting is not great PR." “The best seats were in the toilets” The above, which is taken from one spectator’s account of game 10, is not great PR either https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/2018-world-chess-champi...

Has Carlsen's play been poor in this match? I don't think we can really say that either.
I think you’re right - Magnus might not been on top top form but he hasn’t been playing that badly.

His opening preparation, particularly with White, has been seriously underwhelming.

Of course not
Well they want to sell advertising slots. Spreading the ibullshit is in their financial interest too.
