Re: The wrong confession...perhaps?

It's the patterns as well. There was a televised test on Nigel Short once. If they showed him a position for teconds, he could recall it provided it was a plausible game position. Place pieces and pawns at random on the board and he couldn't. Arguably that's because you see familar structures, so t...

Re: The wrong confession...perhaps?

Sadler’s task was to identify 50 (I think) chess positions - players year and venue - in a couple of minutes. It was positions from Fischer's games. It was made easier that they confined the test to MSMG. Sadler could probably have reeled off Fischer's comments as well. Ah yes. I’d forgotten you me...

Re: The wrong confession...perhaps?

It would take a bit more work, but maybe famous chess positions? Many moons ago Matthew Sadler appeared on an ITV Saturday* evening programme called You Bet. Various people came on to do certain unlikely feats. The celeb panel had to bet on whether they could do it or not. Sadler’s task was to iden...

Re: Aditya Verma

Young man with a promising future? Ah yes, as opposed to Northern lad from a deprived area who can't afford to go to University, who presumably wouldn't be let off It's certainly true that the criminal justice system has an established track record of caring about the futures of some people conside...

Re: Aditya Verma

If indeed, it was as I described - a joke intended solely for friends with entirely unintended consequences - then a criminal conviction is disproportionate. Here's the problem Nick: you say "ah but the Grenfell one was different" - which I don't disagree with actually. In part due to the reasons y...

I am quite sure he has already learnt a very painful lesson. I don’t necessarily disag...

“Chess makes you smarter”, does it?
I wonder if it makes people less smart

Or am I just cynical about my interactions with chess players?
To borrow something from - if memory serves - Bill Hartston.

Chess doesn't make people less smart. Less smart people make chess their game.

Re: good lines against the London System

The London system has become incredibly popular on the chess circuit of late. Anyone know how to play against it??? I play 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bf4 c6 3 e3 g5!! myself of course 4 Bxg5?? is a loss of the bishop after 4...Qa5+ but players have tended to play different lines as White. Stockfish reckons an adva...

Re: Madrid Candidates 16th June to Tue 5th Jul 2022

I assume the change was because of the money generated by a world championship match I assumed the same. Which may be the saviour here. FIDE may prefer to give up one year extra on the cycle over giving up a World Rapid/Blitz championship event. I mean, what would be the point of either of those if...

Re: Madrid Candidates 16th June to Tue 5th Jul 2022

... I would not relish a return to that era, where the chess public were split about who was world champion. I can foresee a situation where Carlsen is the strongest player, but Nepo/Ding is world champion but not really recognised as such I'm not sure I'm thrilled about it either. But I'm quite su...

Re: Madrid Candidates 16th June to Tue 5th Jul 2022

] In that case there's little point in having a World Championship match. You'd be better off declaring the World Champion to be the highest rated player, or whatever other criteria establish a player as the best in the world. Well I disagree with your premise that in every case the higher elo prov...

Re: Madrid Candidates 16th June to Tue 5th Jul 2022

Not that Carlsen will need to play in the candidates'. If at some point after he gives up the title* he wants a match against a "World Champion" he'll get one. FIDE World Championship or otherwise. This is the thing that would worry me most, that we go back to the dark days of the best player tryin...
