Re: Development Officer appointment

Is it me or does Carl Portman's stuff sound a lot like Charlie Storey. By the way, that is not necessarily a criticism.

Re: European Senior Team Championships 2019

From the two matches against Russia "we" scored 1.5 points, not bad considering the ratings. Andrew Ledger drew with GM Gleizerov on top board in the 50+. John Quinn has had a truly remarkable performance on top board for the 65+. With one round to go he has 5/7 for an Rp of 2386, the second best o...

Re: European Senior Team Championships 2019

Mick - England 2 have struggled partly because they only have four players (in Petra Nunn's absence) so they have had no rest days. But Sheila Jackson has done well on top board as you say. Andrew Lewis and Dave Ledger have looked a bit out of form for England 1 in the 50+ group but England 1 will b...

Re: European Senior Team Championships 2019

For those who have been following these events, today is Round 8. In the Over 65s, England are playing Russia and in the over 50s, England 1 are also playing Russia. So, some interesting chess in prospect for our teams. I have been following most of the rounds live on ChessBomb and there have been s...

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

Luke's opponent didn't get remotely close to winning what is an admittedly difficult ending.

Re: Edward Guthlac Sergeant

PW Sergeant was the oldest player ever, I think, in the British Championship itself, at Leicester, 1960. When John Littlewood last played I wrote to him teasing that he'd not quite got the record. Paul wrote back that he'd get it - and he would have - the next year. Sadly, John died before achievin...

Re: Transposing into historic tabiyas

Barcza played 19.Bc1, instead, and went on to win in 38 moves. It looks as if Barcza outplayed his opponent a bit in the ensuing melee ( White took the d6 pawn, Black took the c4 pawn), but the final win was a tactical collapse by Black, time trouble presumably. An engine unstressed by time pressur...

Re: Pal Benko (1928-2019)

Sad news. Pal Benko wrote a fine endgame column in the American magazine Chess Life, much the best thing in that variable magazine.

Re: Northumbria Masters

Morning Nick. Yes, I did mean underrated but I hadn't looked at his previous rating history. Be interesting to see what happens to him in the rest of the tournament.

Northumbria Masters

I had hoped to watch some games from the above event this afternoon, but the link to Live Games on the Tournament website takes you to Chess 24 and all its says is Waiting for Pairings. Since there are no results in the Standings column, it looks like there have been no live games throughout. That i...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

Charlie, I have no idea why you expect an apology from Carl. That seems to me to be quite beyond the pale. What I would say is I hope you think again and post on the Forum in the future because your posts are often entertaining and informative. But I think that this is certainly enough about the Lor...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

Jack, I think that a well done is called for. Charlie obviously feels very strongly about this issue but his post was certainly pushing the boundaries.
