All joking aside about Chris's ability at chess, the play is remarkably good across the board. I wonder how I as an average 180 would manage if I was catapulted in one of this events.
You buy shorts and a blazer, I will provide paperwork, then you can try next year..

Re: World Cadet Chess Championship 2018

I have watched some of the games and have been impressed with the play generally. Thank you for the very comprehensive reports. Shreyas Royal seems to be playing more quickly than he does against adult opponents - well at least he played more slowly against me at Southend this year. But, of course, ...

Re: Brian Gillman

John - if you are looking for an auction house to handle this, any decent provincial auction house will be able to do the job. Go to the-saleroom.com and put chess sets in the search box. You will find a fair amount of trash but some sets that will give you an idea of price. Currently, Eastbourne Au...

Meanwhile, why did Gawain do what he did. The knight sac just doesn't look right. I'd have hacked off the bishop on a3.

It's a reversed Vienna, surely? It's 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 d5 4.fxe5 Nxe4 5.d3 with colours reversed. Indeed, and so 6 Qh5+ was in fact already known to be very bad. The same error of 5...Qh4+ in the (real) Vienna featured in Andrew Hon v Paul van der Sterren, Lloyds Bank 1993, when one of our 190...

14 Qe2 hg5 15 Rae1 Be6 16 de6 f6 was played a bit in the eighties and I spent ages then trying to make it work for White. But it doesn't really.

One of the annoying things about ChessBomb is the Americans (not all of them, of course) who talk rubbish and are complete engine slaves - but even if one of their favourites is clearly struggling, they assume he will win.

There are two more in the Holiday Tournament. Two regulars had booked their accommodation, but forgot to enter the tournament until just after this year's booklet had gone to press, They are not flavour of the month with Tournament Organiser Peter Rowe. *Off-topic alert* I ran a schools' team blitz...

Re: Chess.com Isle Of Man Tournament 20 to 28 October 2018

Justin - Spanish tournaments (as you no doubt know) have loads of players with, as you call it, portmanteau names. Was a lot easier in the old days, not least on the pairing cards, with Arturito Pomar, Antonio Medina and Roman Toran etc
