Re: New Idea for Caro-Kann players

Chris, I'm really not that bothered whether you are convinced or not. We will see whether more strong players (much stronger than you and me) play the idea. I know I suggested it as an idea for club players and mainly for surprise value and you picked up on these points and I understand where you ar...

Re: New Idea for Caro-Kann players

If you play the Caro-Kann at club level, one thing that can get fairly tedious is playing the Caro-Kann. 7...e5 doesn't lose material, which is nice, but surely if you play the Caro-Kann you have to be mentally prepared to play pawn structure chess? 7...e5 is anti-pawn-structure chess, because it m...

New Idea for Caro-Kann players

I guess if you play the Caro-Kann at club level, one thing that can get fairly tedious is the following 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 ed5 cd5 4 Bd3 Nc6 5 c3 Nf6 6 Bf4 Bg4 7 Qb3. Of course, you can deviate earlier with ... g6 ideas or 5 .. Qc7 but if you go down this line, you now have none too exciting a choice...

Chris Howell points out that Jim (JB) Howson is still around and still playing good chess. I think he's around 85.
Jim played on Wednesday night for Writtle in the top of the table Essex League clash against Wanstead and won a good game on Board 8 against a player graded 162.

Re: Blackpool Conference

Thanks Lawrence but I just want the board a bit smaller so that I can see at least the top half of the list of games. Ah well, have to make do with what we have - with which I am still pleased.

Re: Blackpool Conference

Great to have the live games but has anyone got any idea how to reduce the size of the board. At the moment, it fills the whole of the screen and doesn't exactly facilitate scrolling between games.

Looks like Ravi is holding a draw - but of course he doesn't have a Tablebase in front of him!

Re: 2018 Wijk aan Zee 12 - 28 January

If the game today was any kind of preparation by Gawain, then it shouldn't have been. I was lucky enough to finish work around 3.30 today and I was trying to work out what was going on in the early part of the game but failed miserably.

Hi Paul - I do hope you are not suggesting yet another policy document for chess clubs to produce!

It's a shame no-one is watching. Gawain is defending a R and 2 against R and 1 which I think is drawn - but what do I know.

Re: Chess history trivia

How about Gedeon Barcza whose first appearance in England looks like Hastings 72/73. Unfortunately, he appears to have played in two or three subsequent events, albeit they were fairly minor.

Hastings Games will be shown on Chess24 from tomorrow - we tried to set it up in time for today but was unsuccessful!

I don't think Chris Ward's commentary is being broadcast online this year Stewart, I'm afraid
Thomas - thanks very much. I shall continue to scroll up and down until tomorrow!

Re: Hastings 28 Dec 2017 - 7 Jan 2018

Are the Hastings games being shown anywhere else - I have tried ChessBomb and Chess24. It's just I really don't want the board filling about 90% of the screen as it does on the Hastings website. That just makes scrolling up and down a bit of a pain and I can't go full screen because I need to have a...
