Re: Women's Recruitment Officer

Tim, congratulations on your appointment. Dare I ask, will you also be working with Carl Portman, the new Development Officer, to help the federation achieve its goal of increasing female membership to 15% of the total? Edit: When I posted I also considered making the point that another male has bee...

Re: Development Officer appointment

... Is it not possible that Carl Portman submitted the document at his interview... Given the text starts "I am delighted to have taken up the post of the Development Officer for the English Chess Federation..." that would have been forward, no? I wonder if "September" was typed, maybe at the end o...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

After little more than half an hour, the top board game has reached move 28 Now at move 29 and I think Sarana has a draw if he wants it. Looks winning for Sarana (who has White), maybe? You're thinking that White can march his king and pawns up the board and then somehow breakthrough or mate?

Re: Chess train

We set off again tomorrow morning. Numbers seem to be a bit down this year, which I hope doesn't jeopardise its contiuance, given there were some doubts about its future last year which thankfully appear to have been resolved. Some info here . The Chess Train 2019 is held under the auspices of the ...

Re: Council Papers are out

It is the case that when Malcolm Pein stood for International Director he set himself a performance indicator of financing the international teams solely through sponsorship and that this has not happened (that said, having reread the 2015 election statement the offer to resign referred specificall...

Ah, the Chess Trust is a charity and isn't able to fund professional chess.

Re: Council Papers are out

...Finance Chairman: Now Malcolm, you spent £20,000 on international teams?... Ah, just to say that £45K was spent on sending two five-player teams to the 2018 Olympiad in Baku with £32K of that spent on fees made up of entry fees, travel fees, hotel fees and other fees including appearance fees. Re: Council Papers are out

Well done to Carl and best wishes to him in his role. I support the creation of the Development Officer role though I'm afraid I'm skeptical about what results can be achieved. Um, I do, though, have a couple of further questions: 1. Why has it taken almost a year to make an appointment? The creatio...

Re: Don't Understand Grading Calculation

It's perhaps worth pointing out that between five and eight results with at least one of those in the most recent 12-month grading period gets a player an 'F' category grade. 'F' category grades are not used for future grading calculations (instead a new estimate is calculated) and are treated by so...

It's not however a context that fits this particular practice. (Also, of course, it's about much more than plagiarism - it's about all kinds of lazy, sloppy and tenth-rate journalism, of which the plagiarism, extensive though it was, was only the most serious manifestation.) There's no greater reas...

Re: End of an era

Frankly, I'm not too sure that the wider world cares too much about plagiarism. Obviously the original authors do, because it's annoying to see others taking credit for and/or making money from their work, but otherwise plagiarism passes unnoticed except for the minority of committed readers who ac...

Re: Council Papers are out

On the appointment of a Development Officer: I am told that two candidates were interviewed a couple of weeks ago. So maybe an appointment is (at last) imminent if it hasn't already been made (but not yet announced). On funding of the Development Officer position: The draft minutes of the 2019 Finan...
