Re: Swiss Pairing Systems

Interesting Wikipedia page. It often strikes me that the rules for Swiss pairings - or at least the ones in use in ECF-graded events - are significantly complex and I wonder if there couldn't be simpler, more elegant, designs which are easier to understand and code/operate? Has anyone written a the...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

Yes, it's good to see a stronger Major Open.

FWIW, on checking the bulletin, I see the 1998 Major Open - possibly the first in which I played and also at Torquay - had over 100 players with, I count, 71 rated >= 2000 and 10 of those rated >= 2200.

Re: Grade File Checker

Steve, I have a vague recollection the Checker program requires Excel to be installed. If it's not that could be the issue. Anyway, I wondered if you'd tried contacting Howard Grist who wrote the app and whose details, at least in my version, can be found through Help -> About? Or, have you tried co...

Re: Needing to be ECF member to play in British Championships?

It's not the British but a few weeks later, in the same part of the World, the Paignton congress offers week-long tournaments for less. More information here.

Re: Falkland Islands

I see the ECF is claiming jurisdiction over the remnants of the British Empire, although I can't remember them organising anything on the Falklands/Malvinas - is there even an ECF graded player on the islands? Perhaps we can send Nigel to give a simul, or would that provoke another war? Quite. You ...

Re: Falkland Islands

The English Chess Federation administers chess activity in British Overseas Territories who are not members of FIDE in their own right. Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

As I have said the board does need to be held to account. At the same time they cannot be expected to divulge every detail, particularly confidential payments to players. No one’s asking for the Board to divulge confidential payments to players. What was requested were expenditure figures for the O...

My comments on Roger Emerson's report to Gold members can be found here.

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

I would rather Justin had quoted the full sentence, I am making an effort to be less confrontational that I might otherwise. But anyway, I think I can guess the part of Roger's report Angus will take issue with, and would consider it selective reporting rather than factual inaccuracy. But I might b...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

angus -Roger Emerson’s report to Gold members which is grossly misleading. I disagree with you on this matter. it was joint up, well thought out asked for comments before on voting intentions. so what more could I want. it seems there is too much I in team ECF - we volunteer in all sorts of ways fo...

Re: ECF Supporter

Some 2017/18 stats showing counts of members who didn't play a graded game and also averages for the number of graded games played: 3 year memberships may affect these figures a bit - how many of the non-players took out 3 year memberships prior to 2017/18, played in their first year of membership,...

Re: 5 Questions about the ECF Academy Tender that need answers

Well, yes, I can understand how Charlie believes his bid scored higher, based on what he knew about the Longsons bid, but that's rather different to knowing how the respective bids were scored. It also makes the assumption that the bid with most points would automatically win, which probably wasn't...
