But deaths remain disappointingly low.
Do you think that the ignorance that you display in your posts is in large part due to a failure to examine the evidence?

Re: Media comments on chess

It is a comedy from the 70's? Before the program there was the usual warning about some 'outdated attitudes'. There was a chat about men having bigger brain and there not being any females Mathematicians or Physicists and chess was proffered as the supreme mental exercise. Then the 'man about the ho...

Re: 25th 4ncl Congress!

I think it is absolutely right that you have smaller numbers and apply the same social distancing rules that everybody else has to. Separating into groups of 6 may well be a good idea from a health/confidence perspective, but personally I don't think it impacts on the legality of the event for the r...

Re: 25th 4ncl Congress!

A swiss is not really 100 players mingling, talking or whatever. It is 50 distinct events, made of 2 players each. Each event lasts for up to 5 hours. Then the next round is effectively another set of 50 distinct events. The thing is, to me this doesn't seem hugely different from saying that a drin...

Re: Euro 21

As for players, I thought Kalvin Phillips was amazingly good given I have never been that impressed with him for Leeds. Schick and Locatelli have scored amazing goals. To a certain extent Bale was Bale, he did some really clever things, but couldn't be bothered to do the simple stuff like scoring a ...

Re: Euro 21

I'd say it is only Belgium and Italy who have really impressed so far. France and England have won important games, but I think they would have to play considerably better to win the tournament.

Re: 25th 4ncl Congress!

Without commenting on the logic of all this, I think the key is whether the activity is organised. So a choir is not allowed, but people can meet spontaneously at the pub and have a singalong. I don't think you could have a facebook group organising a meet-up at a pub (with more than 30 outside, or ...

Re: How would you organise a junior vs adult tournament?

No, but there is a tradition of prize money in chess events, even at amateur levels. I am surprised you were unaware of that. Yes, but not of cash prizes for coming last. Nor of amateurs getting zero entry fees. When first prize is £150 and last prize is £110, you're not really talking about prize ...

Re: How would you organise a junior vs adult tournament?

Adults prizes 1st 150 2nd 140 3rd 130 4th 120 5th 110 Is it really necessary nowadays to bribe 21/2200 rated adults to play chess? When I was in that range I would have been delighted to play for nothing. No, but there is a tradition of prize money in chess events, even at amateur levels. I am surp...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Ultimately the figures that matter are "And of 42 deaths in people with Delta variant infections, 23 were unvaccinated and seven had received only one dose. The other 12 had received two doses more than two weeks before." It strikes me that 12 is rather a lot of deaths amongst the vaccinated populat...

Re: Racist terminology in chess problems

Imagine how a gesture which means that you are going stop playing because you have already won, performed during the national anthem, would play out with public opinion.

Re: Racist terminology in chess problems

I've had an idea which I fully expect will earn derision from other posters, but I'll give it anyway. I didn't really understand what the term picaninny referred to in a chess context, so my thanks to Geoff for posting the example. One could argue that the concept itself is racist because the black ...

I say 'if' mainly because I am not sure I would be brave enough to take said action. So Kudos to you.
